A woman from Hamburg narrowly escaped a catastrophe: She refuelled incorrectly and her car caught fire. Now she criticises the manufacturer.
Hamburg. Apparently, the Hamburg woman was not entirely familiar with her Smart car: on Wednesday afternoon, a 39-year-old woman stopped at a petrol station in the district of Langenhorn. Her fatal mistake: she confused the tank opening and the external air intake of the engine of her Smart.
The petrol spilled onto the floor, creating a large puddle, according to reports including this one. Instead of informing the petrol station staff, she drove off. The spilled petrol apparently ran over the hot engine and caught fire - suddenly the Smart was on fire. A fireman who happened to be nearby extinguished the fire.
Woman faces arson charges
The 39-year-old woman is now making serious accusations against the manufacturer of the vehicle. "Why isn't that labelled that you can't put anything in there? It looks just like the tank," she said angrily, according to the "Hamburger Abendblatt". She had only owned the car for one day.
"The police said I'd be charged with arson," she said, almost bursting into tears. "I didn't do it on purpose after all."
Volker Jürgensen, head of operations at the Hamburg fire brigade, told the newspaper, "As you hear, something like this happens often." He advises to stop the refuelling process immediately in case of a mix-up and to inform the petrol station staff. "Under no circumstances start the vehicle!" said the official from Hamburg's professional fire brigade.
In fact, the mistake is likely to be known to some owners of the first generation of the small car. This is because at least older Smart models - like the one belonging to the Hamburg woman - have an opening on the driver's side that roughly resembles the fuel tank opening. In later models, the carmaker changed the detail - and replaced it with a vent that does not remotely resemble the fuel tank opening. (les)
