Probably an equivalent - I'm sure some of us here will have had one of these back in the day! I certainly did.

umm... not sure about your choice of tense...

In full disclosure, this one isn't the one I had, but it's nearly identical (different color). I picked this one up for $5 at a yard sale in our old neighborhood in Harvard, MA.
See? I don't always dump-dive! Sometimes I yardsail!

meh.

The Raleigh Chopper had the huge center shift lever on the top bar, non-functional suspension springs, a front lamp mount and asymmetrical wheels.

Had to be purple or you were a loser!!!

PS Colour chart here http://www.rcoc.co.uk/colourchart.htm

PS1 I was just a little old to get a chopper when they first came out.. I didn't know (until now) they had a MK I and MK II (and potentially a MK III).

Oh.
I should note that I had the three-speed Apollo, which did have a big shifter console thing on the frame. This one boasts  a 5 speed derailleur.
So, those look like real springs on the Raleigh; what do they do?
The wheels on the Raleigh do indeed to appear muy interesting!

From recording engineer Sylvia Massy, who has a great sense of humor and some illustrated books.

This is her imagined individual musician monitor controller. It's a real product which allows custom fader labeling. So the labels are Massy's humor.

There are some funny stories about engineers pretending to make a change and assuring the producer it did something when actually there was no change.

A funny music video from 2024 themed on AI. From Descartes a Kant. https://www.descartesakant.com/

They have been compared to an updated Talking Heads.

"Descartes a Kant returns with a new studio album titled After Destruction . Released in all formats, it is a concept album that proposes a narrative arc exploring the cycles of existential creation and destruction.

After Destruction portrays the psychic malaise in a compulsively hyper-communicative but emotionally isolated society, with a retro-futuristic aesthetic, destructive guitars, synthesizers, and poignant melodies.

Satirizing contemporary emotional consumerism, the band incorporates an automaton into their lineup: The DAK , an innovative machine designed to repair emotional damage, which appears in interludes both on the album and in their live performance. Looking to rebuild your life after a catastrophe? Turning your pain into a work of art has never been easier."

What a great find - thanks for sharing!

Looks like there's a few differences; looks like a bigger front wheel (so probably more stable than the Raleigh Chopper...), a rear derailleur (rather than a 3-sp hub) and the shift mechanism isn't on the top tube... just where you'd catch your balls... and it doesn't have the rear rack for carrying the packed lunch your Mum made! :D

Style over substance.

It'll be the beginning of a better time when this generation finally realises that creativity doesn't come from computers, digital or 'smart' phones- it comes form within.
Will this ever occur? Who knows. When it comes to authenticity of expression the Spanish have a word whose meaning is worth looking into; Duende!

Oh hold on... that's difficult, takes patience, persistence and the balls to trust in your own expression. Now what era has that throughout it veins?
