A Call For Humor!

In 2001, I was working in Alice Springs. In case you don't know where that is:

It was an absolutely bizarre town, a microcosm of Australia itself. Just like Australia is mostly empty with glittering cities around the coast where all the wealth is concentrated and elites can fool themselves into thinking they live in a first world country, Alice Springs is mostly crushing poverty with a huge crime ridden indigenous population with one glittering strip where you would think you were in any other Australian city.
…

I can see how broken glass can look like glitter.

…
Despite all the regular violence, drunken brawls, murders, rapes, and robberies, the local news ignored all those issues because they didn't want to talk about crime committed by a certain ethnic group. So the news used to read: "Cat stuck on tree, rescued by firefighters". Or ... "Driving instructor caught drink driving".

So, when a British tourist was murdered, the Feds sent a dozen officers to investigate. They may as well have swarmed the town. They were everywhere, and the locals couldn't get enough of them. On TV they showed the Feds having dinner at a local restaurant. They had run out of stupid questions to ask, so they asked "How was the food?".

So yeah, that's Australian "news".

Which was worse?
- Blaming/accousing his girlfriend?
- Or locking up Lindy for the dingo having the takeaway when they botched the blood testing?

Was it the feds, the local constabulary, or a mix of the two?

I have no opinion on the case. It was such a long time ago, all I remember were the feds + news crew from all over the country descending on Alice. As you know, Alice is a bit dangerous. Even as a pretty tall guy I never went anywhere without going as a group, particularly after dark. When the feds came, suddenly the town became safe. The daily robberies and random petty crime stopped. It made me wonder how much better it would be if there was a larger permanent police presence.

Combine utter misery with no realistic hope, add time and scale, and that's the likely scenario anywhere. Leave it to evolve, and there is hardly no limit to how bad it can become.

The responsible party are the politicians and the voters who elect them, and then politicians tend to handle situations after the fact rather than sorting out the root causes before becomes bad. If at all, they react to the crimes and not what causes it. Eventually it ends up with "the girl can blame herself for being raped/killed", or "no wonder with that family" and it goes on and on and on.

How politicans which means voters which means society prevents or handles the misery is a pretty good measuring stick for how good the entire society/region/country is, and that's pretty universal.
