^^^ Here in Australia, wars are infrequent. So if a patient tells me he's a vet, it usually means he provides medical treatment for animals. All that went out the window when I met an American patient who told me he's a vet. I asked "do you work with pets or farm animals?". He looked confused, then told me "I'm an Iraq vet". That's when it hit me that I might have insulted him. I apologized profusely.

I had similar experience down there when I called a Australian Holman surf wagon with wood trim a "woody" there was cacophony of laughter. Of course there were many other moments like that, but that got the biggest laugh.

... that's a Holden Sandman. Back in the day, some people outfitted it with shag pile carpet, beds, curtains, and disco balls for precisely the activity the picture shows. They were called "f*ck trucks" or "shaggin wagons" and some had signs that said "if the car is bouncin', don't come knockin". And in Australian slang, a "woody" is what you Americans would call a "boner".

So yeah, no wonder they found it so funny. I had a laugh too.

When you get letters with photos of the vet posting with 2 sedated male lions one year, and with a combat uniform from Afghanistan some years later......

...would fit the vet vet description though....

Yes, with wood panels on the sides. In the US, 40-50s station wagons (estates) were made into surf wagons with roof racks for the boards and popularly called Woodys. I grew up surfing but did not surf down there
