The snobbiness still exists. In Australia (and I’m sure in NZ too) if you say “rugby” most people will assume you mean Union.

And not forgetting that in Australia, football, or "footy", is generally understood to be Aussie rules football which includes hand punting the ball.

I’m guessing your friend is talking about League when they say “rugby”. As @sergeauckland points out, there’s a real class difference between the sports. My family moved to the uk for a few years when I were a lad. The posh school I attended did not even offer football as a sport. It was rugby (union) only, football was the working class game.
Back then, rugby (union) was purely amateur so the top level players were often wealthy enough that they didn’t need other jobs or were in highly paid professions.

I know the differences, the history and the stereotypes, but he played Union. And once he got beyond junior level some of the opposition clubs were from the local mines. I couldn't say whether this was a local oddity or more generally true, but by his telling you had a real mix of backgrounds at that level.

The top tier of English Union clubs are predominantly in the south and midlands, while the top tier of League have a more northern concentration. I don't know whether the counterexample I know at grass roots level is an outlier, or more typical of that level. Or how the picture may vary around the country, or in Scotland and Wales for that matter.

In my northern town the state-funded grammar school which I went to, plus other grammar schools in the town, played only rugby union - no football. Roger Uttley was in the sixth form while I was there.
