I was particularly impressed with the hrvatska milja. Of all the ... I mean ... just ... why bother?

And I didn't know that Ole Rømer had invented a mile too. He's been one of my heroes since first year when I read in a physics text book that he invented the speed of light over 400 years ago and, with the primitive instruments available at the time, estimated it was 2.2E+8m/s by watching the moons of Jupiter. Amazing! So learning he had a hand in this very silly Danish mile is a bit of a disappointment.

It happens. This was one of the outcomes in the 35+ Madison at the 2013 masters nats.

David Tiemeyer had by this time retired from making frames so the chance of a warranty replacement wasn't too good.

A friend of mine, who's a big guy, has snapped a couple of aluminium frames. Unfortunately, aluminium bicycle frames have a finite life span and will eventually fatigue and fail with repeated flexing; the more you flex them, the quicker they will fail.

Whereas, provided you protect it from corrosion, a steel bicycle frame will pretty much last forever. I advised him to stick to steel frames from now on.

Good question... Got four of them, two standing upright and two half-visible lying flat. Every dentist seeing it gets the creeps and wants to send me me to hospital for removal ASAP. Since I might reach 60 next year and never had any problems with them, I let them be.

Eeek, never dug so deep... he got it wrong by roughly 30%... but then again, 400 years ago... We may get over the fact that he also had his hands dirty about the mile conception... rest in peace, Ole.

I heard someone on the radio (US NPR) talking about the current Ebola outbreak(s). They mentioned an area about the size of West Virginia.
Who the heck knows how big West Virginia is? In Imperial or metric units? (NO GOOGLING or AI querying!).
I would bet money that very few in WVa know how big it is.**
The other popular unit of land area in US news reports seems to be New Jersey.
I'll allow readers of this post to draw their own conclusions.
