There is useless and then there is really useless:

In 2022, at the World Aquatics Championships, Andrea Fuentes (a coach and former Olympic swimmer) had to dive in to save her athlete, Anita Alvarez, after she fainted and sank, because the on-site lifeguards failed to react immediately

I can totally identify with this.

I fail to understand why people do use those at all... I never used it a single time, and my lips never crack or feel dry.
Those of my friends who have been consistently using it for years since their early ages, now all have dry lips, constantly needing re-hydration... go figure; looks like "create the precedent, all will follow" kind of thing...

Just my 2c, though; as somebody might indeed suffer from some form of poor water retention.
