In preparation for the decommissioning ceremony for the USS Enterprise NCC-1701D, we have the exceptional honor of being escorted by one of the newly re-engined Federation ships...the B-52X.
[For those outside the US, the US Air Force is one more time going to install more modern engines
on the B-52 fleet. The newest B-52 was built in 1962.]

While only a casual observer of US military boondoggles I would suggest this would have to be the one and only time the US military post WWII has gotten value for money from any project.
Maybe other early stuff like the X15 also was value for money especially as an R&D platform.

My grandpa lived in four different German states, each with a completely different system. Without even moving. It's wild when you think about it.

My German history: Mecklenburg (East), with some shopping trips to West Berlin, then Ulm (soon after reunification) - border between Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, then Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (West). Between all this, "2,5" system changes in Poland. Makes me feel old as sin.

A little anecdote: I came to a Munich hotel (1995 or so?) and while parking my car (with Polish number plates), saw an older lady in the reception looking at me sceptically... So I went inside and said "Grüß Gott, anmelde möcht I mi". She: "Und Sie sind, bitte..." Me: "a Saupreiß, a polnischer" and handed her my Polish passport. My great-grandfather and great-grandmother might have made it possible - he died aged 106 and she I guess 99? And they got their first kids quite early...

Which is half true BTW - said great-grandfather was an officer in the Prussian army (not quite voluntarily, but still)...
