We have bent trees around here in the woods, seemingly randomly placed. The story is the native Americans would bend them intentionally as trail or directional pointers. They had to start with young trees and keep working on the shape with rope tie downs.

They aren't as wild as the above picture. Just up for about 4 feet (washing machine height ), sideways 90 degrees for another 4 feet and then they let them grow straight up.
