A Call For Humor!

And next day, SWAT will come to arrest the walrus, for whatever :p

That oysters .. with feet ... they are alive .. can't eat ...
Author/poet Roy T. Blount, Jr. summed up my feelings vis-a-vis oysters.

Song to Oysters
I like to eat an uncooked oyster,
Nothing's slicker, nothing's moister.
Nothing's easier on your gorge
Or, when the time comes, to dischorge*.

But not to let it too long rest
Within your mouth is always best.
For if your mind dwells on an oyster ...
Nothing's slicker. Nothing's moister.

I prefer my oyster fried.
Then I'm sure my oyster's died.

My inner enfant terrible synthesized a John Dowland style song out of it, plus lute.
But I won't ask AI to make it real, if I do, his ghost might come and kick my ass :p

We've got a Berlin right here in the Granite State... but it's pronounced "burr'-lynn" (slight emphasis on the first syllable).
People'll look at you like a flatlander if you say it like that German Stadt.
Of course, we also have a small city called Lebanon, but it's pronounced sort of like lebbanun.

Yankees do things like this so that outsiders are easily recognized.

Test it yourself. Fly to Boston* and then take the Logan Express bus out to the northern suburb town of Woburn.
Say the town's name to someone on the bus and see what happens**.

unless, that is, you already know how it is pronounced -- although you'll still probably get an odd reaction. ;)
"Woobu'n" is a rough approximation of the proper pronunciation

True Lebanon story.
We saw the Wailin Jennys (faves of ours) at the Lebanon Opera House. They had an opening act called Joy Kills Sorrow*. That group's singer was a young Canadian woman who commented at one point that she was warned about the correct pronunciation of the town's name; people would laugh at her if she said it like the country.

Later when the Jennys came out, Soprano-Jenny Ruth Moody (a Canadian, too, come to think of it) - a lovely, charming, and guile-less young woman with a beautiful voice - said something along the lines of how nice it was to be in Lebanon (pronounced like the country). The audience laughed, and she looked really puzzled. :p

* Joy Kills Sorrow was sort of a proto-Lake Street Dive, I think. The former's bass player (and possibly founder?), Bridget Kearney (who is very good, BTW) went on to the latter. Joy Kills Sorrow was sort of a string band (mandolin, guitar, banjo, stand-up bass, no drums) that played with absolutely zero twang. I rather liked them. :)

Be sure to check out Leominster, too :)

I had the 'pleasure' of staying in a Travel Inn & Suites in Lebanon, New Jersey for a work trip many years ago :)
Lebanon, NH is (probably) far more pleasant. :)

The aforementioned Lebanon Opera House is the building with the clock and tower visible just to the right of center in the rather lovely photo above taken from a nearby hill. The white building with clock & steeple just below it and to its left is a UCC church. :)
