Copying a book in Roman times was a hard job. Still, in the middle-ages, when there were the "amanuensis", from a-manu: by hand - doing-it-by-hand - mostly monks that (even without being able to read / write) just copy-cat books; with all those fancy first-letter-of-chapter. But this is a completely different story, of course.Maybe it was so serious, because a book was a serious matter in Roman times, not easily copied in thousands or millions...
