Man, that was goofed. Breakdown...

• Audiophile is a modern made-up word (originated in 1951 in -- you guessed it, our favorite source -- a magazine article).
• Audiophile is a hybrid word (not portmanteau) formed from...
  • audire, a Latin noun meaning 'sound' (or alternatively a Latin verb meaning 'to hear')
  • phil, which is a Greek verb meaning 'to love'
• So the made-up word audiophile simply means to love sound or to hear. That's it.

Any meaning beyond that?? Welcome to the world of subjectivity...
