When I did English Literature at school we had had no idea which book we’d be examined on. We had to study every book ever written in English.

We also didn't know which book the exam was going to be about, but we knew it was going to be one of the half dozen or so we read during the year. Or perhaps it was something different, like a comparison of genres, styles, etc.

You're not telling me that a history course in Australia teaches nothing but Julius Caesar (or Augustus) for the entire year?
