To be precise, those aren't fairly tales but cautionary stories written by German psychiatrist and author Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann. They were meant to be read to children to scare them into good behaviour and keep them from doing dumb things. Written in rhyme and illustrated with frightening images, they kept generations of kids awake at night

A modern, poignant and very funny reimagining of this book was published by East-German caricaturist Karl Schrader and aphorist Hansgeorg Stengel.

That said, Grimm's fairy tales can be quite grim in places, too.
