And the town in Berkshire, a popular way stop for pilgrims in the 17c., is called Slough of Despond. I lived in an adjacent town for some months when I was young.

I lived near an office park named Moccasin Slough.

I always pictured a snake shedding its skin.
 
Come to think of it -- back in the day, a big, fairly early biotech company, Celltech, was located in Slough in the UK.
Indeed, I remember going there once... a long time ago.

Well because I started this with my bog vs fen post, I would be remiss if I didn't mention my Grandmother Mary Perente was born in a small farm house on the shores of Potato Slough, on Bouldin Island in the San Joaquin Delta, CA. She graduated in 1912 from Antioch HS a part of class of eight, four girls and four boys.

But the town is pronounced with an ow at the end, like ouch.
In California it it pronounces with a Lou.
