It's shellac. You ever try to clean that stuff? In any case, most of the time 78s will be noisy no matter how you hold them. I used to collect 78s when I worked at Rare Records, Glendale. Nothing quite like gently handing over a collectible 78 to someone and watching it split in half. As I recall, the disc where I experienced this horrible phenomenon was a Charlie Parker 78 called "This is Always". Another one I lost that way was the same artist's "Now's the Time". Should have made a clock out of that one.
Nope, but I don't clean normal vinyl either.

shellac, as I am sure most if not all of y'all know, is soluble in alcohol.
