They bought theirs with a six-foot field mower and a six-foot tiller. Most hobby farms don't need a lot of tractor. Better a smaller one with lots of attachments. Loader, backhoe, auger and mower for my little Massey.
Here it is on delivery day with the field mower attached.

The economics of tractors is interesting. The hobby farm (gentleman's farm) tractors (usually ca. 25 hp) are decidedly poorer values than the midline tractors. A tractor like this one is a better investment, but with only 10 acres (and no where to keep it*) it really was more tractor than we need!
It would be nice for the fall field mowing here, though.
The fellow who mows out fields for is uses a big tractor and a flail mower -- and it still takes him about half a day.
Tractors are hella cool.
Most of our neighbors have nice ones.
Some of 'em are collectors, too.

These two Internationals are still working tractors, too.

* They had a 3-car garage (visible in the photos above) that was deep enough to hold the tractor and the field mower and close the garage door!
PS Backhoes are freaking expensive!
