I didn't see a thread dedicated to 80s music, so here it is. The older I get the more I seem to turn to the 80s for music. I'm not one who bitches about there being no good new music, but now 60, I'm starting to think the 80s may have been the most great music in a single decade. It was a most experimental time, both culturally, and by extension, musically. As much as I love the classics from the time, such as Peter Gabril SO, U2 Joshua Tree, and Dire Straights Brothers in Arms, I love me some cheesy 80s goodness too.

That's possibly the most classic 80s movie and theme song of all. Look at that cast! I didn't love that movie when it came out, but wow, hits me in the OG GenX 80s feelz seeing that crew now. That song, cast, and movie was the definition of the 80s experience. Post your favorite 80s music regardless of genre. Extra points for music vid posted:

If you have not spotted this one, a good collection tied to John Hughes Films, Life Moves Pretty Fast

Or if more Punk leaning, another soundtrack Repo Man

What first surfaced with FGTH was a pure shock-pop band which got most of its airplay (or not!) because of the (still to this day) a rather raw-dog single in the form of "Relax".

However, behind the band and the creator in chief of the UK 80's sound was non other than the massively talented and influential producer, Trevor Horn.

The creation of FGTHs 1st album is legendary. It was Trevor horns at his parasitic best.

There are some truly outstanding tracks on this album and imho, the 12" version of "two tribes" is the best 12" ever made.
It's magnificent.

The album is linked above. Enjoy.

Some great songs on that one! Relax will always be an 80s anthem. Favorite is The Power of Love.

I've openly engaged people in debates about the 'best decade' (as though it matters) for music, intentionally taking the side of the '80s to be provocative and to remind people of some things. Chiefly, not all of the music had what we now think of as the 80s sound. Think of Van Halen, Metallica, Dire Straits, Police & Sting, SRV, Clapton - all put out great stuff in the 80s. You mentioned some of the best albums of all time. Joshua Tree, Brothers in Arms, Synchronicity, Master of Puppets, the list goes on. Even CSN notched a great album in 1982.

It just so happens that I've been thinking deeply about '80s music lately, as I grew up in that decade. And I can't seem to shake it, the immense pleasures of Billy Ocean's Loverboy:
That's some video, with the Star Wars inspired sci-fi action!

Not only was there a song called Loverboy, but there was the group Loverboy as well!

Exactly so. I grew up with 60s, 70s music, and 80s, and there's a lot of great music from the 90s and beyond, yet, the music from the 80s is something special that cant be denied.

At least when we go in the grocery stores (here in US anyway) we're now treated to stuff we sing or hum along to - lots of Bowie, Gabriel - even Lou Reed.

From the Lost Boys soundtrack, love the Echo & the Bunnymen version of People Are Strange of The Doors.
Being an 80´s teen (born in 1970), that version got me very interested in The Doors and look into their music with more interest.

I'm recently set up for 5.2.2 Atmos on Apple Music, and I'm impressed by the Greatest Hits recording by The Police. Unlike most of the Atmos music I have listened to, the engineer (Hugh Padgham I believe) did not make any use of the LFE channel. I'm using Rogue Amoeba's Audio Hijack on my M4 Mac mini and I can dial in derived bass from the satellite channels to suit my taste for bottom end. Wrapped Around Your Finger is a standout for me.

I know it gets criticised but Genesis’ 1980s catalogue is pretty good.

Sure it’s not prog. But it’s not pop or anything that fits into an easy category.

The Abacab album, for me, was the most original of that period. The bass and drum work, as well as PC’s more dynamic vocals, make the album worth a listen, even if you have to put out your mind that this is the band that recorded Supper’s Ready…

Truer words were never spoken. I remember going to London in the mid-80s, being absolutely gobsmacked by the size and variety of record stores (Tower, HMV) and picking up the 12’’-versions of Relax and War. I was 11 or 12, and got completely blown away by the Two Tribes Annihilation-mix. Usually I find remixes to be quite ******, but this one enhances the original - and makes for a dancefloor freakout! Difficult to find these days and not even on the official FGTH-releases (!!), but here it is on a compilation album on Tidal:
