Thank God I don't live in the US ...
I wouldn't be able to afford more than a few concert or cinema tickets per year over there. Last year people from the USA flew to Europe for a short vacation and a ticket to a Taylor Swift concert and payed less than the price of the concert ticket alone at home. Prices for tickets and transportation for the FIFA soccer worldcup also seem to be far more expensive than anywhere else.
To the mods: I hope this is not too political.

Here in Germany I pay between €13 to €16 for the IMAX screen, and €2 less for the standard screens. No popcorn or coke for me, so that's all for me.

Regal sold its inventory of $50 “Dune” tickets projected in 70 millimeter IMAX film in a matter of minutes.
If true, then good for them... Supply and demand in effect.
I went last year, a 'small popcorn' which is about a mouthful compared to the American equivalent* cost me more than the ticket to see the film.
*Also we don't get the option to have melted butter poured on it, don't know if they still have that over there.

I'm a cheap bastard. I don't pay for subscription services and I rarely go to theaters. I have a home theater that I'm extremely satisfied with including a very good 77" OLED TV.
I get that I'm "missing" seeing it on the big screen, but I'd rather wait to see new releases than pay, what I consider to be, silly prices.
With the money I save I buy any music and blu-rays that I want so I can enjoy them in comfort and at my leisure

I'll buy Dune 3 on 4K when the initial release price settles to my price

4k projector, 5.1.4 atmos system, always in the front row, popcorn and drink at discount prices and I buy 3 4k Blu-rays for the price of a cinema ticket.

Even for a movie I wanted to see badly I'd wait for it to stream if it cost $50. I'm assuming that it cost less after opening night, especially at discount matinees.

My local price for adults is $10.50 USD. Snacks are crazy expensive though.
First to see it and willing to pay the price, for an extra $40 they can have that "thrill".

There are only a few 70mm IMAX screens in the US so they can charge a premium, especially when the movie in question has avid fans. Normal movie tickets are expensive but nowhere near this. I saw project hail Mary on 70mm IMAX, I think the ticket was $27, but there were options for around $14 if I settled for pretty much any other screen in the area.

I have an 70mm IMAX theater 5 miles away from my house. Tickets are normally $29.50 . When I go, it's for the benefit of visitors.

Our two comments might make it seem like these things are more common than they are, but according to this map they're even rarer than I realized:
If you are in Nebraska you can pretty much forget it. It is conceivable that people would drive for hours to see this Dune showing, so charging $50 upon arrival is not the highest bar people will need to clear. It's very much an exceptional movie ticket.

"Just" seeing a move is not actually egregiously expensive, I am not sure if we ought to be upset or not that they've come up with fancier ways to show movies and charge 4x for them.

For $50 I can fly to Budapest, stay in a hotel, and get very drunk out and about. And still a get curry and a bus fare on arriving home.
And then once the booze and dodgy curry kick in, you hallucinate the movie?
Am I supposed to be even infinitesimally upset or outraged or aghast or filled with a sense of civilizational decline or rage at economic inequality and the ravages of inflation in response to this news?
