I am getting great results with an interesting custom speaker setup in my bedroom. I stacked my Dynaudio BM5A Mk2's on top of KRK S10 and Klipsch R-SW121 subwoofers. The source is a MiniDSP 2x4 HD. The RCA outputs from 1/2 go to unbalanced inputs of the KRK subs, then they go balanced XLR to the monitors on top using the built-in crossover set at 80Hz. The RCA outputs from 3/4 have a 60 Hz / 24dB slope low pass filter and go to the subs on the bottom, and there's a ELAC SUB1010 center sub in between the two (not pictured) that plays mono, and is connected using splitters from 3/4, so it also has the low pass filter on it. So the bottom 3 subs play 60 Hz and below, then the middle subs plays up to 80 Hz combining with the bottom subs, while the monitors on top play the highs. I instantly loved the sound of this setup and just felt like sharing.

It's not surprising. You have put the top sub at the quarter point, or thereabouts, of the room height, and so cancelled some of the room's eigentones. Do the same with the lower one (chairs work surprisingly well for the purpose initially), and the evenness of the bass should improve again.

I added a 45Hz / 12dB HPF to outputs 1/2 and then 45Hz / 12dB LPF to 3/4. This way the middle sub is playing 45-80 Hz while the low ones are playing 28-45Hz. I'm trying the Bessel filter.

Wow, love this setup! After fiddling around with stuff, I settled on the Bessel 12 dB filter crossing over at 50 Hz for the bottom row of subs, then 50 - 80 Hz for the middle subs, and 80 Hz and up for the speakers.
