Expanding the Supreme Court, forgiving student debts.

Let’s be objective

Where does the Constitution set the number of Supreme Court Justices, or for that matter any Article III officers? Please cite article and section. Also when did we settle on 9 Justices again?

As for student loan forgiveness, wherever anyone falls on that ideologically ultimately that was an issue of statutory interpretation. That’s an order of magnitude different from flouting COTUS Article 1 or the Fourteenth Amendment (Section 1 of which reads, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside…”) as is happening now.

I have take issue with ALL of these things, including the one’s you’ve mentioned.

They are all bad, isn’t that the point?
 
That assessment is wrong on many levels. Trump tariffs are not normal by any standard. They vary at the drop of a hat and continue to change. It's certainly not normal policy that has ever been studied before under any circumstances. When tariffs are a weapon and not simply a stable economic tool it's a totally different impact. Business can't plan, individuals can't order outside the country without taking large price risks. Business is reducing the workforce just as they normally do prior to a recession. The answer is to fire the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics when you don't like the report? What can possibly go wrong with this tactic? Even more uncertainty and slower recovery.

In addition, when you combine mass deportation of immigrants at the same time the impact is amplified in every sector. All off a sudden there are few or no workers to harvest crops, no landscapers, roofs don't get replaced, service employees are hard to find. Everything gets more expensive quickly. These workers no longer pay into Social Security and Medicare, causing these programs to run out of funding sooner. Add the mass destruction that comes with climate change in various parts of the country and insurance rates rocket while few are available to complete repairs. Put all of this together. Mass immigrant deportation, huge new tariffs and violent weather make a bad situation much worse. It's really a perfect storm brought on by mass stupidity.
If you really believe all of that there are plenty of ways to makes leveraged short bets on the financial markets. If you have enough money riding out the perfect storm can be quite comforatable.

War powers is pretty much the only aspect of Constitutional erosion that’s reasonably both-sides-able.

PS I had to look it up, but we’ve had 9 SCOTUS Justices since 1869.

I love how “objective” this site is - c’mon man. I’m not a constitutional attorney and these questions rise to level of SCOTUS for interpretation. So give your “cite measurements” a rest and try and have an honest conversation with differences of opinion and perspective.

The issue is not “differences of opinions” - it’s errors of fact, and hiding behind a smokescreen to justify them. In audio terms what we have here is basically this conversation:
“This speaker measures badly. It has uneven frequency response and directivity, and high dynamic compression.”

“They all measure badly. The speaker you say has good measurements has no PRaT and the midrange is not liquid. Also my spouse didn’t say how great it was from the kitchen.”

“Show me where it measures badly”

An honest conversation requires good-faith engagement with facts. Willing to try that?

Some believe this is the actual reason for many of the disruptive, seemingly arbitrary changes of late. To benefit those in the best position to take financial advantage, to the detriment of everyone else. All the stated objectives are supposedly a smokescreen.

By that logic, you just announced that you are part of the problem. I would suggest caution in mixed, anonymous company.

And you believe that to be an order of magnitude higher (worse) that forgiving student debt? Or the discussion to try and expand the Supreme Court. (Yes I know they didn’t) It was to provide an example that both sides are capable of extremes.

For clarification, my understanding is he has put forth removing birthright citizenship when the parents are in the US illegally - going forward.

I am not of the understanding he is trying to rescind it for those already born here.
 
In 2008 the GDP of the EU and the U.S. were about equal, now the U.S. is far ahead.
Ok. So how much of the economy is fueled by debt in the first place?
And it's still amazing that the population which didn't understand the economy during a pandemic and post pandemic went ahead and voted for gigantic tax increases on themselves. For the second time, because Trump already implemented some of the biggest tax increases on the public in his first 4 years.
This happens when people look to live in their bubbles consuming infotainment that is very low in educational value. And thus, politicians can basically say whatever they want because people know close to nothing.

Even in the first 4 years they targeted those who are legal. He attempted a coup after his loss in 2020 and faced zero consequences.
He has said he wants to rule not only USA and the world, talks about annexing Greenland, Canada etc and some of still don't quite react. What has he said about federal takeovers in supposed high crime areas?
Is the population so asleep that it notices absolutely nothing?

USA is now an unreliable partner internationally. Rather than increasing its influence it will more likely risk getting increasingly isolated.

So forgiving Federal loans paid out to US citizens or using Congress to add seats to the Supreme Court are as extreme, in your view, as directly contradicting what is written in the US Constitution?
