Hi

Some of us, perhaps , need a "chill pill":
A person comes here, and asks for suggestions/recommendations, . not for orders or mandates. We suggested, he choose his own, different path from consensus, or from our (secret? wet? wishes), sometimes known as recommendations..
That's only fair. His money, his tastes, his choices, he gets to live with his choices not with ours... That's IME, the way of life. Why do some would feel a bit annoyed, even in some extent to believe that they've been taken for a ride? Seriously?
@MKR enjoy whatever you end with.

Peace.
This. I’ve just activated the ignore feature for the first time with one individual.

I love the idea of variable directivity. I used to have DefTech bipolar speakers (for a 2.0 system), and I liked the effect. I'd like to have speakers with rear drivers that have continuously adjustable volume, all DSPed to keep power response smooth.

First I have to say Revel is a company that has polished the art of using forums to shamelessly promote their products which I was actually OK with until the tn

Well I just spent an hour and then some to edit a thoughtful post and accidently pressed one of the side buttons on my mouse and lost it. Now I have to cut down a tree in the back yard. MKR is a very fortunate man to have a couple sons that could etch out time to hang out with the old man for as long as it took.

I find AJ a bit abrasive in his posts online choosing to kick sand on peoples beach towels rather than avoid them, but that has no bearing on his skill as a speaker designer and he has everything to lose if this doesn't work out, so MILK IT, BABY. make those speakers perfect! evil laugh.

How to build the perfect speaker, what the science shows. The thread was on another forum and it landed after my less than stellar experience with the salon 2's that I'd spent 9 months trying to get believable sound out of. this was when I hit the edit button, left a fairly thoughtful(for me) post on MKR's selection and posting on asr before accidentally hitting some side buttons on my mouse and losing it forever.

got it thanks. I gave the Revel 328's a week and after a couple direct ab tests with other speakers i knew it had to go.

I'm a big fan of what can be done with bipolar, dipolar, and other multidirectional formats. Imo a speaker should get two things right: The direct sound, and the reflection field. Arguably these unorthodox formats can present opportunities for improvement in the reflection field.

My guess is that AJ uses a few discrete DSP settings which affect both front and rear drivers rather than continuous adjustability of the rear drivers because the front drivers need to be fairly precisely re-calibrated to compensate for the timbral changes which would otherwise arise from the rear-firing contribution.

Like you said, had you gotten the McIntosh it could have been a different story. Or go actives like these guys here and don’t have to worry about powering passive speakers lol.

I don’t think Revel uses these forums or dealers or anything. They literally do no marketing and the general population have never heard of them. The dealers have no idea on predicting inventory etc. They used to have great service though (not sure anymore since they changed the transferable warranty policy). My voice2 is still under warranty it every thing is else is older than 5 years so we will see.

I read a bit of that chat with AJ as well. No comment is the best I can say - well I guess I can say I see why AJ decided to loan a pair of speakers to MKR. But I’ll leave that alone.

How do they manage to stay in business if their speakers are so unlistenable?
That's a good question, take a look at all that plastic and cheap components and internal components you get with KEF at such a high price it's nothing short of Robbery. Take a look at Bowers build quality and just the materials alone are solid and stable and produce a sound presence I just can't find in any KEF, even at the 20+K number, I mean how do they even get away with this. We can say its subjective but when you have many references to compare to and you take your time the difference is clear.

I have spent extensive time with multiple B&W models over the years and can’t stand em. Let’s just say severe “sparkle” on the top end that sells speakers in the showroom, but becomes fatiguing over time. Simple to say, definitely not flat FR. The last experience was few months ago hearing an 802 at dealer and I could only handle about 5min before running from the room. My limited experience with KEF on the other hand has been quite positive, and at least to my subjective ears, sound to be very flat measuring designs. Of course YMMV. If you like B&W, that’s great you have found your nirvana, truly, they are just not for me. I do agree though the craftsmanship and build quality of B&W is top notch, no doubt about it.

The measurements I’ve seen on B&W vs KEF speakers very clearly confirm what your ears have heard.

B&W solid line, KEF dashed line. Which one has the elevated high frequencies? (rhetorical question)

What did you compare the 328 to? The only same room comparisons I was able to make was against the Salon 2, 228be and Perlisten S7t. The Salon 2 was the overall best to my ears (by a fairly large margin).

@Newman OK, finally getting to your request, so sorry for delay. Between my work and this thread going down the crapper for couple days, took me a bit to come back to it.

So, the shortlist as it stands today, in no particular order ...

KEF Blade Meta (haven't heard them yet, but want to!)
Clarysis Minuet/Studio Plus
Diptyque Reference
Legacy V System
Legacy Aeris
Salon 2 (hey, ya never know)
Soundfield
D&D 12C (supposed name of the unreleased 8C big brother)

*** Note: There are other speakers that I have really liked that would also be in the short list, but they are over my budget (some are WAY over my budget)

Soundfield is in the proverbial lead right now, and I would be surprised if I don't go this direction, but not 100% decided yet.

Hope this is helpful for you
