I made up the new cables today (bottom). I needed about 3" behind the DAC with the old cables (top), the new ones need about an 1" (and the IEC mains plug is now the limiting factor).
The low profile XLR plugs are designed for thin cables and have a very narrow cable entry. I had to terminate my cables outer insulation outside the plug and use a couple of different sizes of shrink tubing to get a neat and secure fitting (and I still needed to bore out the cable entry in the plastic cap a little).
Anyway, the cables work fine and I can now put my EX5 where I wanted it
