I have a strong bias toward performance videos. This will be the 13 th year of compiling a list of the 40 or so best performance videos. Of course, "best" is highly subjective, so I have a small panel to help me score a selection of 80 performance videos within the genre of indie-folk and adjacent genres like country, Americana, blues, bluegrass, and even some rap and choral selections. Emphasis on acoustic over electric. No screaming guitar solos. But there is some incredible guitar work from Julian Lage, John Smith, John Butler and Julie Malia. To be a great guitarist, these days, your name has to begin with "J", apparently.
I have prepared a few playlists at this point: one called "the year in music", another for bluegrass/ country fans, and then an indie-folk discovery list with 750 videos, in alphabetical order by artist. There's also an audio version that can be downloaded in spotify, or YouTube Music.
In the "year in music" playlist I foregrounded 10 or so exceptional videos, then added 70 more. Which artists stood out for you this year?
