2024 Bose 901 Series 7???

Meyer Sound's Ultra Reflex
Hey that is interesting stuff! Meyer did the best-sounding PA I ever heard, at Alpine Valley for Jeff Healey + Little Feat + Stevie Ray Vaughan. And YES the show was jaw-droppingly great :)

No highs and no lows... It's gotta be Bose
That's kind of a funny one because actually they had the lows (the sub module) and the highs (the tiny cubes) and it was the like 100-200 Hz that was missing. For normal people that Acoustimass system likely sounded great-one of my MBA class groups met a member's apartment, he put on a movie, rumble and hiss and everything, sounded like a movie. A more conventional system with bigger speakers and subwoofer could sound better but in the absence of any comparison the Bose setup sounded great. I would have been curious to hear music on it but we never did.

True, it did a lot for what it was. Back in the day the Acoustimass became so ubiquitous, it kinda spawned the phrase. I have clients that won't even put that up anymore... "Oh, my wife likes Alexa..." is what I hear.

Someone will likely have to independently measure it. Bose typically does not release measurements for their speakers. Even basic high level measurements like frequency range are usually not provided. I suppose the looks are what they are. Like it or hate it. They certainly have the talent to make a good speaker, but haven’t done much with loudspeakers for so long… let’s hope it’s great, but I tend to doubt it will be,

Just to be clear: at this point, we've only seen this Kith collab, which isn't ever going on sale?

If Bose is spending marketing money on this, I guess the question is whether it's simply for brand awareness, or actually hinting toward a new 901 Series product?

It could be interesting if McIntosh and Sonus faber were involved, but they would have been brought in too late to be involved with product development I guess

Actually in these days of tiny drivers, you'd think they'd have developed such expertise...I guess they do sell Bluetooth speakers. I wonder if sales of Acoustimass have gone the way of the dodo, as has most HiFi?

I think Bose recognizes the Acoustimass concept flaws and if it’s not dead it should be. Trying to make a subwoofer fill in a massive portion of 80Hz-300Hz(???) or whatever was silly. The cubes were an absolute joke. But what do I know? people bought them like candy at Halloween. I suspect they have learned from Sonos and will look at ways to be more relevant to people who appreciate sound quality. The new 901 is not a tiny box. So that’s a start.

LOL, well aside from that. Altho I imagine they still need particular room placement which likely wouldn't appeal to most.....

Bose is already a really huge brand, so I cannot imagine there being any value unless they were testing the waters for a new flagship actual speaker product.

The acquisition of McIntosh wouldn’t simply be for McIntosh itself. Maybe some of it is for the automotive potential, but more likely than not, they could offer a flagship Bose speaker through the McIntosh network and IF it actually performed well, it would be an comeback story. Sony’s SS-AR1/AR2 or even the Yamaha NS-5000 get audiophile credibility even though the vast majority of Sony and Yamaha speakers are low cost consumer stuff.

I also sent in a Meyer Sound MM-4XP which is SOTA for a full range 4” driver (even though it’s really 2003 era technology).

Not necessarily. They could have been collaborating as two separate companies and then done the buyout later. Bose sold the Professional line April 2023, which probably gave them enough of a war chest to look for companies to acquire. I would think M&A takes a year of talks and diligence from start to finished press release.

It looks like it includes and amplifier and the box which is probably a version of the Bose Streaming Amplifier as a preamp.

Looks like an NAD 3050 to me...

The new 901 is not a thing, it's not even for sale really. As for Sonos they seemed great conceptually but the ones I've heard somehow sound I don't know how to describe it, flat. Not just a lack of bass but not super clear above that, like compressed. But they are the new Bose in some sense yes good observation.

Listen to the Era 300. Among the Sonos line, it has the least compression and I felt that way before learning about the lead engineer (from JBL Pro).

Agree that this Bose 901 is complete vaporware. They did release a special “collaboration” headphone before a mainstream release, so here is hoping that we get something interesting in 2025.

I haven't heard that, I wonder if I know anyone with one. The Bluetooth speaker I like is the long-discontinued JBL Control X Wireless-not full range bass from a 5" woofer but the mids and highs quite clear. That's what I need in some kind of not-too-deep monitor situation, also capable of high output and ideally a fair amount of directivity. A unicorn in other words...

Doug Button talks about stuff. It’s the only Sonos speaker with a compression driver

Doug Button was behind the 1500AL in the JBL Everest and former VP or R&D at JBL Professional

Sonos Five is
SPL @ Max Volume
94.0 dB SPL
DRC @ Max Volume
7.30 dB

Era 300 is
SPL @ Max Volume
90.9 dB SPL
DRC @ Max Volume
4.01 dB

So it’s possible that the compression “feels” less because it doesn’t get as loud. I owned both in stereo pairs, and felt that the 300 was a much better speaker.
