2 + years in the making …. Finally coming together

Tbh any bigger subwoofer will deliver good bass as long as they're well configured in a decent room. A Rel will probably not be the best bang for your buck of course, but still more than good enough, especially if they're a pair of beefy 15". I mean even my two 8" fills my room with nice bass at loud levels and if two 15" couldn't do the same then I have no idea what engineers at Rel are smoking.
And seeing that the preamp is doing most of the heavy work anyways I'm sure OP will be more than happy with the Rels ;)

For 10k, you could have two custom subs built to order with whatever wood finish you like.
Really? Can you recommend a company who does custom subs with custom wood finishes? Thank you in advance

Somewhat perplexed regarding the negative vibes on Rel’s, especially the 212’s I am attracted to, I have been reading reviews and both HT centric websites as well as magazines like the absolute sound have nothing to say but positives, these particular subs score 9+ out of 10 on every website I came across and seem to be recommended for both action movie impact as well as subtle musical notes.

Not doubting the opinions of anyone but a bit confused as to why such stark opinions….

Subwoofers are difficult to measure, so opinions are quite varied and they are just that, opinions.

Since distortion is much harder to perceive in bass and Sub-Bass, subwoofer quality needn't be quite as precise as mains.

Your RELs will be fine. That's not the place to focus. Your in room response and DSP are much more critical.

Did you ever read a negative review on anything in any of these magazines or websites? Are the scores almost always correlated with price?

No, but any decent carpenter can make you the needed box in whatever design you like. Selection of amps and drivers should not be an issue. And as long as the internal volume is kept and the thing is build like a tank, you should get an absolute monster of a sub! For a room like this, closed sub would be the way to go. That makes things a whole lot simpler.

Some resources of objective data in subwoofers, both commercial as well as DIY.

Most probably they will be. They are not bad subs, and the expense ones will probably be excellent. But they are not very good value.

And REL is still peddling the high-level connection nonsense. So @Altair, if your installer wants to connect them that way, you’re guaranteed to not get an optimal setup. Which brings us to another issue with the pre-amp: it does not have a proper subwoofer output, and no bass management.

Thanks for your honest thoughts. I am tortured as I write this, on one hand the visual aspect has been extremely excited, on the other I certainly don’t want to spend 10k on 2 subs that underperform

If I could take a moment of your time...
I'll respond by direct message.

As you are new here, you are not perhaps aware of the ASR culture and approach to audio. Objective Measurements (hence the science in ASR...) rule, and typical subjective audio terminology is secondary at best, rejected outright at worst. Other forums will have lengthy discussions on the sonic differences between power cords, which is pure BS. To Rel and how that applies, you're paying mostly for looks, name, (no longer relevant) high level connection, etc, vs objective measured reasons to drop that much $ on a sub. Various brands offer as good, maybe better, performance for substantially less $. Bottom line is, REL is viewed as very poor value.

Thank you for the advice. Would it be better to switch to 2 15 inch subs or 4 10 inches or 4 15 inches?
Did I miss the room dimensions?
I'm using four 18" subwoofers in a regular old apartment. I'm planning to add four more.
Theoretically, they (each) could be replaced, for example, with JBL SUB18

Better in custom enclosures without holes. The frequency response and time domain would remain unchanged, but the available amplitude would increase by 6 dB (at four times the amplification power).
