Just got a new Motorola phone. Only USB-C, no 3,5mm ... if I wanted to enjoy some good sound, is it still the Apple dongle (does it work on an Android?) or anything else I should keep looking for?

//
Apple dongle will be volume limited on Android. Unless you want to jump through hoops every time look for any CX31993 dongle. Ignore ALC5686, KT0210 or mystery dongles, they have worse metrics than all above. Next step up is CS43131 devices staring from $25, only needed for full size headphones and shorten battery life with four times higher power draw.

I use a usb-c dongle to aux to tape deck adapter in my 1999 Lexus. Noise noise every where, but I can still enjoy the music :) Dam Lexus and it's electronics will last forever.

I'm going to get the apple dongle for my Samsung phone.
In my experience playing around with car radios, a good tape adapter on a oem radio sounds better then aux on oem radios (even on aftermarket radios) . Of course, once you feed an aftermarket radio files, it destroys that tape setup. Car Aux ADC's would rank lower then the cheapest Realteks.

AFAIK these are simple analog inputs directly feeding the amp stage, I don’t think ADCs are used.
Impedance should be high (no issue I think), but 1V may be too low in some cases…

Ever thought of fitting a smart radio/media player such as one of the Pioneer ones?

Got a CX-Pro dongle for €5.50 two days ago that most likely is exactly the same as this one, nothing to complain:

ignore the last part , all issues were due to bad usb connection as you can read in following posts.

The noise at 50 mV can be system dependent as @amirm said, these devices have usb SYNC connection, or mybe to some glitch with the hardware uac2 volume control, i remember once having strange hissing with a CS43131 dongle when quickly playing up and down with os volume slider during some tests.

Nice review, I am not surprised on the performance. However I can tell you the dongle on my wifes Penta driver isn't broken. This one was never taken out of the box, so it had to be shipped this way.
It also supports audio input for using the mic.

Other CX31993 tested in this website, like Meizu mblu lifeme pro (also has MAX97220 as independent amp) and Yongsee y01, lacked 50mv testing, but I have a Jcally JM6 pro with CX31993 + MAX97220 and the hissing with IEM is terrible, much worse than with the integrated laptop headphone output. It's only useful with lower sensitivity headphones such as a DT770 pro, anything over like 100db/mw and it's really bad, I've seen some comments on Reddit saying the same, so yeah I believe it's not a defective result shown here, also remember seeing a similar jitter pattern in the 12k test with the Meizu lifeme pro review, so yeah it's a CX31993 thing.

I would like to see a Realtek ALC5686 based dongle tested with 50mv measurement, it is the other super cheap dac on Aliexpress, maybe it does better in terms of noise floor? but yeah for now at very low prices it's just not worth it to buy anything other than an Apple dongle or a cheaper CS43131 based dongle like Jcally JM20.

I wouldn't bother with ALC5686, their data sheets look worse than CX31993.

Figured so, but then again, it can be worse in more inaudible parameters (up to a certain point) such as distortion and be better in audible parameters such as noise floor (with sensitive IEMs).

Yes, the Lexus integrates the Nav, climate controls, pc and audio all in one unit, so replacing the radio I loose other things like AC. Unless maybe I find a lesser spec Lexus with separate AV controls, which I'm willing to do if I find it cheap enough, for now, tape is ok.

I'm in two minds about rating this. If the bad 3.5 mm connection is a common problem it's a headless panther. If it's not, then I'd say the performance is fine for what it is, a dongle included with a cheap pair of in-ears. I ended up splitting the difference and voted "not terrible".

I would argue that this is exactly the way it should be.
Only if Amir assumes the user wants to pay 2-3 times more, incurring current draw increase by four times(CS43131). But that would be a waste driving IEMs on portable devices.

yes it works with android. check moondrop may.

I am not sure why people demand super high res in mobile applications, honestly. I know that whenever I listen to music on the move, it's not environments I can truly immerse myself in the experience (and when on the motorcycle, I truly shouldn't to begin with). On long flights these days, I just use Bluetooth with something like my Sony Sony WF-1000XM4 and it sounds glorious and lasts for many hours. I used to have $500 wired Shure SE535s, and they sounded awesome (still better than Bluetooth) and kept noise away with isolation... but the convenience of Bluetooth is too much to ignore, and the sound quality compromise immaterial in such environments like public transport or gym or travel. Plus smartphones no longer offer direct audio miniRCA anyhow. And I am sure there are good USB-C adapter DACs, and I own a $300 one, but I don't even know where it is - my usage patterns switched to 100% Bluetooth except when at home.

We are not after high-resolution but rather, enough power to drive your headphone and absence of noise when driving sensitive IEMs and headphones. Both of these limitations are quite audible and don't relate to the thing having enough resolution or not.
