$10,000 budget for mains. Used/New, what are you buying?

Looking for mains that would be used for HT and music. Also, looking for mains that can play full range and provide satisfying bass independent of a subwoofer. Want to avoid speakers that are bright or fatiguing to listen to. Looking at towers that can be purchased new or on the used market. What are you buying?
You should urgently post something about the budget, otherwise you won't get many tips in your price range and will even miss helpful ones.

My list, to make the choice, even more complicated to the OP :D:
1) Revel Salon 2 used (show themselves on the used market at times around 10K a pair)
2) Revel F328 Be used (show themselves on the used market at times around 10K a pair)
4) Neuman KH 420 or Genelec 8361. New
5) JBL 4367 (slightly over budget new, but used? maybe)

Peace.

I think you got some great suggestions. Many of these would require a big room though. Revels are really good - both 328s or Salon 2s.

Not sure where are you based but even Blades seem to be available in this price range.

Perhaps not the endgame speakers as Revels or Blades, but really good as well and somewhat cheaper, at least in EU.

Hard to beat Salon 2's if they are available for under $10k used. I have a pair I bought 10 years ago. They are still going strong. With the original boxes and shipped on pallets LTL, there is a low probability of problems. Unfortunately many owners consider the Salon 2's as their last speaker purchase so used availability may be limited.

There were a lot of silver or white Revel F328Be's around with some amazing deals. You may find a pair for under $10k. They are shipped new and hopefully used, in huge cases, again on pallets, LTL, so no worries with shipping.

If you decide you want to keep most of the money in your pocket the Revel F208 is a great choice. F208's measure about as well as any speakers. They are discontinued but you may still find new ones and of course there is used.

I use KH150's as computer speakers and they are really nice. The KH420's would likely be good, but I've no direct experience with them. I'd rather have towers.

Speakers with list prices well over $10k should be available at 20% to 50% off. Always get quotes.
I agree with the salons idea - I have a pair as well and yes these are my last speakers unless something goes wrong with them.

There are two pairs for sale in AVSForums for 10K per pair.

There’s a nice selection of REVEL speakers listed at usaudiomart also.

In practice do the 8361 have enough output to rock out full range 2-3 meters? I know what the specs say but my brain still says "bookshelf" speaker. I know the are pretty big though. Is the coaxial arrangement a huge advantage in midfield/farish field?

Been tempted to replace the 400 lbs of stereo equipment in my living room.

I see no reason why these wouldn't perform excellent at 2-3 meters.

I have Adam speakers that have half the watts of the Genelecs ("only" 550 watts each) I listen to them at 4 meters, I can get over 100dBA continuous and bring my building down.

The 8361s have 1,000 watts each.

Distances recommended by Genelec:

P.S. I forgot: the 8361 weigh 32 kilos each.

At 106 dB at 1m it is limiting the high end. At 3m, that’s 96 dB.

So if you are listening loud, it might slightly strain under transients.

Same problem with the Neumann KH420

Meyer Amie starts to give up a bit in the woofer range at high SPLs but the tweeter is better. Amir didn’t go up to 106 dB.

But Production Partner did and rated it at 104 dB at 1m. And even at the 108 dB level, the dip was just 5 dB, which is a lot less than the dips you see in the KH420 and 8361A. So while PINK noise can have high SPLs, those aren’t quite perfect at high distances.

The Theory SB25 does pretty well at 106 dB

As does the Genelec S360

No one should be listening that loud. But in the poll here

If you are listening at 6m, 106 dB metric is just 90 dB.

And don't forget the JBL 4367, that is made for bigger spaces and hardly is stressed at 102dB/1m

The JBL M2 is an active variation of it, and measures similar.

(again from Erin)

And a cheaper variation of it, the JBL 4722 (cinema) speaker is very similar in sound i think, i heared both side by side and the difference is almost nothing altough the 4722 is a lot cheaper. The difference is the (not so fancy) look of the 4722. I never saw measurements of those, but i know they will be similar to the M2 and the 4367

For one speaker, freefield. It's much louder than that with a pair in an actual space.

Agree. People should review their needs carefully. The counter argument is that if you are listening >6m away (which was only 2.2% of the votes), there’s a good chance that your room is a lot bigger. It’s not like people are in a 7x7m room and then putting the speakers in the corner and sitting against the rear wall.

In one post here, there is someone talking about a room that is 25 ft wide, 60 ft long, and a ceiling height that varies from 18 ft to 30 ft.

Hundreds of speaker choices out there these days. Of course you will get the standard replies. But I think it would be a good idea to do your own research. And 10K speakers may not necessarily be any better than 1K speakers. That is for you to figure out. Where to start...

They recommend “safe bets” here, but I agree with you there’s plenty of good options out there.

I have just been finding out how good they are at 2-3m. Absolutely no issue with getting real loud. The scary thing is I dont realise how loud Iam getting as the distortion is so low and it keeps sounding better!

That’s a major plus, some speakers I tried sound aggressive and hurt my ears when playing loud.
