“If you can’t hear this, you’re not an audiophile…”

I find recordings like this confusing. But it obviously isn't really a defect since it became pretty comon to "engenier" the soundstage even with classical music. I can only listen to classical music recorded with a single stereo pair or if it can fake me into believing it is

I have to disagree.

If it were some sort of experimental recording, maybe contemporary classical, that might be different. But this was a straight classical recording, and it shouldn’t be there.
It's so normal in classical music recordings, really, that I listened to his example multiple times for the "fault" without realising that was it.

I guess I've just got too used to close miking?

If you can hear this you are a bat...

This happens a ton with classical recordings, particularly chamber music as the violins leak into the right channel (think about how the instrument is oriented) or the soloists are near a center tree and move a bit.

The other weird phenomenon is the "drum kit collossus" astride the band, with his hi-hat on the bass and the toms on the sax player.

Independent of everything, I’m really curious as to what @Yorkshire Mouth thinks

The Chick Corea Trilogy albums are particularly pronounced in this regard, though Brian Blade is such a skilled and sensitive drummer that’s it’s pretty nice to take his seat for the recording. But then the piano is also panned across the channels…

A lot of solo Piano and Piano Trio/Quartet has that effect.

I find a lot of this fella's videos to be slightly baffling, like I'm never sure of the exactly point he is trying to make.

Also...he definitely has that weird "smart aleck" look and delivery. Actually reminds me of that look-in-the-eye from the sex pistols John Lydon, a sort of sarcasm
written in the DNA. The kid you knew was gonna mess with the teacher in class.
