When things are enshittified to the extent that the money you spend on music is repurposed to develop death drone technology, as is patently the case with Spotify, despite the game of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic among their command chain, IMHO it is time to seek an alternative.
Try e.g. https://www.junodownload.com/
I don't stream music, partly because I don't know where it comes from; I use physical media.
But good luck to all those who do stream; I'm not telling you anything you don't know if I say the landscape is becoming more complex.

I've at least jumped ship to Tidal ... And I think there is ample opportunity to improve on the Spotify experience, even if you love supporting its founder's politics and paying musicians as little as you can without actually stealing the music. More competition is good for the market, let's cheer them on.

There it goes again, the "streaming companies don't pay artists enough"... are we saying our favorite artists are incompetent idiots that lack the ability to make informed decisions as they sign up for their music to be available online?

Here are general rates paid to Benn Jordan comparing the major streaming services' compensation pay out per stream back in January 2025 . Elsewhere I've seen that Deezer (my own subscribed to streaming service; nice yearly discount for "premium" membership) has a less than simply linear artist payment schedule; it depends on the number of subscribers in an area and their number of playing hits of the artists in a specific time frame.

You can debate the rates per play, but Spotify is also giving my subscription money to podcasters and audiobooks, stuff I don't listen to or care about. For that reason alone it makes sense to switch if I intend to pay musicians for their work.

Just like we should grant artists the free choice to upload their music to streaming services as they see fit, so do we have the right to listen (and pay for) any streaming service of our own choice. I also could not care less about Spotify's podcasts and audiobooks, but I see value in what they do for me when it comes to music. And it does not in any way mean that I do not buy media from my favortise artists. Over 44k tracks and 4k albums, all legally acquired, and the library keeps growing.
