Thank you very much! I think a Toslink switch is the best option, as it also avoids one unnecessary DA/AD cycle. To be honest I ordered the Wiim blindly assuming that the coax was an input not an output and planned on connecting my CD player that way. :facepalm:

Unfortunately the Marantz CD Player seems to be fixed volume in that regard. The small volume control on its front only affects the headphone out and the manual does not describe any other options to change the volume. I don't know of any either.
