Any problem using Wemo Smart Switch to control amplifier?

Seems to work fine, in the unlikely event that anyone cares.

Is 14 AWG good enough for speaker cable?

Yes. If it is good enough for 15 amps 120 V, it is good enough for speakers. I use 12 AWG, but only because that was what the botique vendor (Blue Jeans Cable) had. The thicker the wire, the harder it is to work with.

Any problem using Wemo Smart Switch to control amplifier?

Can I use one of these to power on and off my DIY Class D Audio amplifier? It is assembled from a kit, and I don't have a remote switch. For several years I have used an eco power strip to trigger the amp when my DAC/pre comes on, but lately this has been causing problems (random loud...

Forest Fires, Air Quality, Weather Patterns, ...The World ...

The 3 million acre fires of 1910 were not the result of either climate change nor lack of forest "management." Things have, however, changed in the last 120 years with respect to both. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/09/climate-change-increases-risk-fires-western-us/ The...

Forest Fires, Air Quality, Weather Patterns, ...The World ...

Much of this region that burned was second-growth redwoods. If the old growth hadn't been harvested, it would have been far more fire-resistant. The fire suppression policy the right wing-nuts like to blame on the "environmentalist left" were actually put into place at the behest of the timber...

Forest Fires, Air Quality, Weather Patterns, ...The World ...

Coming up on 3 months since our local fire started with a lightning storm. It took out about 970 residences. Mine survived, but most of the rest of the houses in the region got incinerated. We spent about a month in an evacuation center, somehow dodged SARS-CoV-2. Haven't felt like listening...

Advice: Dirac Live option with cleanest signal path under $1500

I just downloaded the processor application v. 1.1.0 for the Mac here: https://live.dirac.com/download/ (Also has Windows.) I assume it prompts you for registration during install or startup. They used to offer a free trial; maybe still do. Sorry if I have missed something. I am just...

Advice: Dirac Live option with cleanest signal path under $1500

That's really odd. I got both together. Admittedly I haven't looked in a long time. Maybe something changed. I will take a look when I get a chance.

    Planning my US Coast-to-Coast cycling - Spring-Summer 2020

I ride with 38mm Compass (Rene Herse now) tires and they don't slow me down. I just built up a new bike with a Soma Saga touring frame that can accommodate 55mm tires. I was thinking of going for the 700C x 55 Antelope Hill endurance version.

Amir, you're damned if you do, you're damned if you don't:

I understand that something might measure well but for some reason, despite this, might not sound too good. If something measures quite poorly (I have not read the NAD review), is there any reason (say, euphonic distortion) why it might nevertheless sound good to a majority of people...

    Planning my US Coast-to-Coast cycling - Spring-Summer 2020

If you haven't played around with the Adventure Cycling Association interactive route planner, you should: https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/adventure-cycling-route-network/interactive-network-map/ Also, you might want to consider going West to East.

Advice: Dirac Live option with cleanest signal path under $1500

They do, at least Mac and Windows versions. (Sorry if I misunderstood the context.) I am still on version 1.x. (There is a version 2.x that is either released now or in late beta. I am waiting for all the bugs to be worked out before upgrading.) With this, I can run it as an AU (or on...

Is their any evidence that the SMPS in a Mac Mini audibly degrades sound quality?

I have an under-used 2010 mini I could send you if you would be willing.

Is their any evidence that the SMPS in a Mac Mini audibly degrades sound quality?

Gosh, I wish there were more posters like you on ComputerAudiophool. I'm a bit surprised that a Mac Mini case wouldn't be an adequate Faraday cage. Presumably if contamination of the USB datastream was a thing, comparing to that delivered via optical could be revealing.

Is their any evidence that the SMPS in a Mac Mini audibly degrades sound quality?

Title pretty much says it all. Briefly, I've been taken to task (elsewhere) for suggesting to someone that there is no need to "upgrade" the internal SMPS in a mac mini in order to produce high-quality sound. As a qualitative/subjective observation, I hear no difference between USB or optical...
