Buzzing power amp (Sherwood AM-8500) [UPDATE: Now measuring]

It wasn't but simply because I didn't bother to try. It doesn't really bother me in practise, not enough to get the unit to the next proper specialist and go without it for a couple of weeks, anyway. The hum coming from the transformer should be easy to check for, it's clearly audible and...

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

Thanks, that definitely interesting. The MathAudio Headphone EQ Foobar-Plugin should work, I've built him a preset file: u/oratory1990 also made one for his Stax Lambda Pro (as well as my AKG K712 & Philips SHP9500):

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

The CD-Player gets frequent use too so that wouldn't work for him.

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

Thanks. I think I've found a better solution. The SMpro M-Patch V2 (different from the M-Patch 2) has a (somewhat coarse) stepped attenuator (which can be swapped for an included continuous pot if desired, likely the same one as in the JBL/SMpro Patch Nano). I found a good condition used one...

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

The Topping L30 would do both, it might be a bit expensive for him though since his Philips X2s play 2nd fiddle to his Stax (SRM-1 mk2 Pro + SR Lambda Pro) and the Aune X1s already has reasonable headphone amp (the 5.9 ohms output impedance isn't great for 30 ohms headphones, though). Selling...

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

I've never had any issues with cordial either, only the...

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

Assuming he goes with the Nobsound or the Topping L30 (I think I'll be pushing for that one, I might offer to buy it off him if he changes his mind), would you say one of these and a pair of these would fit the bill? Or maybe DMX-cables for better shielding? You mean the seperate volume...

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

Did you have any issues with channel imbalance at lower volumes? The unequal cable lengths (short from the source, long to the speakers) would actually be good, the Knob would sit right next to the DAC (and the Stax SRM which has a pass-through input). 150€ from the Douk Audio (aka Nobsound...

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

I've seen that one, frequent user complaints about the pot and the manufacturer hasn't bother publishing meaningful specifications. "Product Information" (5 pages of marketing, no specs) "Quick Start Guide" (basic instructions, no useful technical specs) Looks like a bad copy of the...

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

Oh I'm aware of that, hard to avoid in the target price range but the JBLs have their own volume controls on the back so I'm hoping their input sensitivity can be set to use the pot at the upper end of it's range. The other issue is the high output impedance of passive volume controls on lower...

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

Right, I think I misunderstood you. I'm looking for volume control between the DAC and the speakers (the DAC is being used with sources other than just the PC). I'm trying to find a solution for a friend that doesn't compromise the sound quality of a pair of JBL 305Ps if possible at as low a...

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

Would you care to point me towards any cheap ones (other than this one)? This seems to be the version Amir measured and this an updated version.

Cheap volume control for active speakers?

Hi, I'm looking for a cheap solution for volume control between a DAC (Aune X1s, cinch outputs) and a pair of active speakers (JBL 305P, TRS or XLR inputs) for a friend. I've picked out a few candidates (see below), what sort of issues do I need to be aware of with this sort of passive volume...

Buzzing power amp (Sherwood AM-8500) [UPDATE: Now measuring]

Right, I think I've found a decent (qualified and fair on pricing) repair shop. 1. Are there any simple measurements left that I can do to narrow down the cause of the buzzing (to save on repair cost)? 2. What components would make sense to have replaced while it's in the shop? If I can get...

    Sherwood AM8500B/AVP8500B KEF Q5

I have attached the service manual. I'm having problems with a Sherwood AM-8500 myself, maybe solderdude and restorer-john can help you out too. By the way, did your AM-8500 produce a noticable buzzing noise from the transfromers or the speaker outputs before it blew?

Buzzing power amp (Sherwood AM-8500) [UPDATE: Now measuring]

It's autoranging (the lowest range is 2V). I always get the same reading (~0.015V) even when I shut off the terminals with the switches on the front panel.
