I'm guessing it's just a misnomer and that it has nothing to do with actual gain, but if, say, the replay gain info of a single track is -8.01 dB (in foobar), I'd imagine it acts as a limiter of sorts to keep a track at a certain (optimal?) level of volume. I got that part. But how is then that...
