Imo double amping should not cause such an issue. While not optimal, it usually is fine if both gain stages are clean and output level doesn't exceed input sensitivity. Further more, 2i2 3rd gen maxes out around 1Vrms from Headphone Out, so I'm not even sold if that could pass as double amping...
