How replicate the sound of a specific audio components

The most effective method would probably be to remove all of the internal electronics from B & replace with those from A, leaving the unit cosmetically identical.

    MiniDisc (MD) - Appreciation (Video)

I got into MiniDisc right at the end of its lifespan, just as the Hi-MD format was introduced around 2004. I was getting back into sound recording after a 20 year hiatus & wanted a decent portable recording device for an art project. I'd always disregarded MD due to the compressed audio...

Repairs required for Audiolab MDAC Power daughterboard

If your Audiolab MDAC is anything like my 8200CDQ (CD player/ DAC / preamp) it uses a load of paralleled Lelon capacitors crammed together next to the regulator heatsinks. Just by chance I happened to notice that the capacitors in the first stage filter were swelling, but managed to catch them...

I am a bit dissapointed that one speakers distortion in 5Khz region is a lot higher than then other. Normal?

Ok. So one speaker has a definitely audible problem & measurements confirm this. I still think it's worth running those simple tests which I suggested yesterday, so that you're absolutely sure that the problem lies with the HF driver itself & not something else (including the bass /mid driver)...

I am a bit dissapointed that one speakers distortion in 5Khz region is a lot higher than then other. Normal?

A resonance such as this (if that's what it is) could well be audible as sibilance. I'm not doubting your hearing ability, but the only way you'll know for sure whether you "really" hear it, or it's just placebo effect, is by doing a blind test in mono. You'll need to get someone else to swap...

I am a bit dissapointed that one speakers distortion in 5Khz region is a lot higher than then other. Normal?

I hope this was a blind test! There's no way that I would trust my own hearing to discern this kind of difference if I knew at the outset that there definitely was one, especially knowing which speaker was which. Expectation bias is a devil!

I am a bit dissapointed that one speakers distortion in 5Khz region is a lot higher than then other. Normal?

This is interesting... It's good that you've taken several measurements here. But the fact that the indicated distortion peak depends on your measuring distance suggests to me that it might well be a resonance elsewhere in the speaker. Bass drivers usually don't have much response up high, but...

    An Audiophile's System

This has made me think about the whole concept of live versus recorded music. I suspect that most people who love music, appreciate both for what they can each offer. (To prevent diversion of the currrent topic, I'm tempted to start a new thread on this elsewhere...)

What is on your workbench right now?

Since I'm fixing a piece of audio equipment, I thought I'd post details here. This is the chassis of a Bush tabletop radio (AC34) which was bought by my father in the mid-fifties. I remember it in our house as a kid. Then, later it got cast out to be used as a barn radio where it had a...

    Advice for Microphone

The lack of response to your enquiries is probably due to your question being far too general. It's hard for us to give any kind of practical response wihout knowing what you're trying to do. We need to know: 1. What are you actually wanting to record? 2. What's the lowest frequency in which...

    Dutch & Dutch 8c Review

I know that this has been a long time in the pipeline but thanks Erin for taking the time to get it right & also for a truly excellent review. I think your graphs are spot on, they show everything we need to know & the concise written summary rounds it off nicely. As you say, the video is there...

    Representing music as visuals

Any process, which atempts to create visual stimuli solely from an audible input, will not in itself create new information, but only bombard our visual sense with derivative material. This is regardless of the complexity of the processing algorithm. Whether the addition of the visual element is...

Does Shure Sm7B have high self-noise?

I checked the "cloudlifter" web page and I can find no proper specification anywhere. They do say that the device gives an additional gain of 25dB (which you won't need with your Motu M4), but nowhere do they mention the equivalent input noise! They just wax lyrical about JFET input stages (as...

Does Shure Sm7B have high self-noise?

The SM7b is a very low output moving coil microphone. Having eventually found the specs, which are hidden on the Shure website well away from the end user's prying eyes, they're still not entirely clear. Ok. Since this is ASR, we can do some "back of envelope" calculations... SM7B...

    Electrostatic speakers?

Indeed. Peter Walker's thoughts on electrostatic speaker design, including more advanced possibilities, were eloquently summarised in his series of articles for Wireless World magazine in the issues dated May-August 1955. The series begins with a clear overview of electrostatic loudspeaker...

    Speaker and room measurement idea

Hi & Welcome to ASR! If I understand you correctly, what you're attempting to do is to create an "EQ setting" which you can apply to your DAW to simulate the sound of a "grotbox" through your (presumably accurate) studio monitors. This is ok in principle, but the problem is that a simple EQ...

    Where to buy equipment

In the age of global online stores, it's good to remember some of the smaller players who punch well above their weight & have knowledgeable sales staff too, if you care to give them a call. I always like to support local-ish businesses here in the UK/EU if I can, so will add my...

Noisy microphone cable with phantom power enabled?

Bin them or return to supplier. At the very least, contact Thomann to inform them of the problem. The cables might have been freebies, but if they are causing you, the end user, grief, then that's bad news for the supplier who sent them in good faith. Thomann are a reputable company and value...

Great interview. Thanks for posting. I'd no idea JD had (secretly) designed the first log-periodic antenna. Smart guy!

    ATC SCM19 Bookshelf Speaker Review

My dear fellow, why all this vitriol? What have ATC ever done to you all the way over in Singapore? You might not care for their products, but no one is forcing you to buy them, and there are plenty of other speakers on the market. Amir has completed his review and many of us here have posted a...
