If you have to control volume digitally upstream, the convenience of having a nice volume knob is lost.

DSP isn't the whole thing though. Positionning the speakers & the seats properly in the room remain important, even if you can partially remove the room modes with the DSP.

Even with the tiniest plugs (orange ones), they have a tendency to leave my ears, which have very thin holes I guess :-(

Disable all but EqualizerAPO. In other words, first: disable all Windows enhancements, then second: enable a -4dB preamp in EqualizerAPO. Then don't touch the Windows enhancements settings again otherwise you would disable EqualizerAPO. In addition, in EqualizerAPO you can disable original APOs.
