    Big sounding mini speakers

I saw the review of the Sonos on this site, which was very favorable. All I can say is that I've heard them in a domestic environment and they seem to tick all the boxes except one........ they just don't sound very musical to me (unlike, say, an LS3/5a).

    Naim Stageline phono pre

I used a Stageline K for many years. It was a good match for the LOMC cartridges I owned (Linn, Lyra) and sounded good for the price. The Stageline N, however, is not a good match for modern HOMMs (input capacitance way too high).

    Yamaha HS3 - beware / quality issues

I suspect that's a cosmetic plastic surround that's not going to influence performance(?)

    Harbeth now with active version

Honestly, you just can't anything seriously on the HUG - it's so heavily censored against anything negative about their speakers (and I own two pairs of Harbeths - M30s and P3ESRs).

Bookshelf speakers, small room, close to wall.

From my personal experience, rear-ported speakers just don't work well near a rear wall. You need a sealed or front-ported speaker.

    Dealers leaving Naim

Check out some recent Naim Forum posts - looks like Naim is welching out on servicing even relatively new (less than 10 years old) gear with no convincing reasoning!

Custom speaker enclosure, as innert as possible

Whether you like the LS3/5A or not, more science-based research was conducted on it's cabinet that most (all?) modern speakers. https://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rd/pubs/reports/1976-29.pdf

    Does step/impulse response matter?

Yes, one is the corollary of the other.

Speakers reviewed here at ASR- Mostly from members? Shipped by truck typically?

Unless you have the original manufacturers packaging and double or triple box the speakers, I would never ship speakers by USPS, UPS or (especially) FedEx. And don't think insurance is going to pay for any damage - read the FedEx insurance "terms and conditions" if you want to see a classic...

Are modern speakers all just overpriced regurgitations?

What are (arguably) the best speakers in the world today? That list most certainly would include the Quad 57 and the LS3/5a (measurements notwithstanding). So, yes, to the OPs original question - if we haven't bettered 1950s, 1960s and 1970s speakers, has there really been any progress at all...

What is the worst speaker you've ever heard?

I recall the official power handling spec was 8W RMS! Not that I wanted a Disco/PA speaker but this was enough t put me off buying a pair. Interestingly, I ended up with a pair of B&W DM3s - with a monstrous 15W RMS power handling rating!

    Harbeth Monitor 30 Speaker Review

"I have Harbeth and Neumann KH150 here, playing side by side, and I can tell you that speech/voice is definitely more intelligible thru Neumanns." My Amazon firestick has a "Dialog Enhance" option that does the same thing by boosting 1-2kHz frequencies by about 6dB! The one certainty about...

    Harbeth Monitor 30 Speaker Review

Neither did the M30 - it used the Radial 1. The M30.1 and on used the Radial 2. ahoffer - you can't compare the M30.2 FR plot from stereophile with the M30 FR plots in the OP - they are take under totally different measuring circumstances.

    Harbeth Monitor 30 Speaker Review

Not according to the manufacturer...... they are "subtle improvements on a sound original design".

    Harbeth Monitor 30 Speaker Review

But with different measurement parameters and techniques I don't know if you can compare them(?)

    Harbeth Monitor 30 Speaker Review

I've had two pairs of Harbeth speakers (well, three, if you include the LS5/12a, which were a truly horrible loudspeaker), a pair of P3-ESRs and a pair of M30s. I think my preference was for the little P3 but the M30s were OK. Most reviews of the M30 are extremely positive. Only two have been...

    Rogers LS3/5a (BBC) Speaker Review

True, but that is the most expensive new, production version available. Other, new, licensed, production LS3/5As sell for $2000-$3200. I don't think the new, Chinese, Rogers LS3/5A is selling in any significant quantities (partly because of the price and partly because of where the components...

    Rogers LS3/5a (BBC) Speaker Review

I wish people on this forum would stop obsessing over the original erroneous price quoted in this review. No new commercial LS3/5a sells for $5000 (forget the absurd "white belly" Hong Kong prices and the equally absurd "Kingswood Warren" prices). They range in price from $2000 (Mobile...

    Rogers LS3/5a (BBC) Speaker Review

I've owned LS3/5As for over 40 years. I've tried numerous alternatives in this time (ADS L810s, early Kans, LS5/12As, Aerial 5Bs, P3ESRs, M30s) but always go back to the LS3/5A. Yes, they are inaccurate but this inaccuracy is on the "euphonic" side. With a suitable subwoofer to a) fill out the...
