Instead of hanging anything off the ceiling beams, build a cloud on top of them. Plenty of depth for mineral wool plus an air gap. Or you can incorporate the ceiling beams as a frame for a cloud.

Try the EQ first. It is free after all! If it is still not to your liking, sell them and try something else. Also, this would be a great time to get some data on your room response which you can compare with the next set of speakers you get.
