Hifiman Edition XS insane mod + measurements

I know that message is generic for in general, but it would be funny to use an amp with output impedance of 10 ohms. FR wouldnt change since impedance curve is flat, but almost half the power would be wasted (since XS is around 15 ohms measured)

Hifiman Edition XS insane mod + measurements

Interesting, and big results. Thank you for posting so we have more data to think about in the thread.. Hifiman egg series are all similarly constructed so im sure it is quite applicable

Hifiman Edition XS insane mod + measurements

Im glad :) Some months passed with the mod, and now removing it makes it sound obviously different. Kind of like with headphones when you get new ones, it kind of feels like maybe its not much of a difference, but only once you go BACK do you realise.

Hifiman Edition XS insane mod + measurements

Haha, i used to do a similar thing for my old pads as well, but i used folded toilet paper instead. I experimented putting it only on the portion behind the ear, so it raises only that side and gives an angled pads effect. Thinking you know, maybe it changes spatialisation, changes pinna...

Hifiman Edition XS insane mod + measurements

Nice solution as well, as your username implies very pragmatic :) Bonus You might have noticed that when you get your hand closer to the back, even covering the grille, the sound becomes more and more "closed in" but otherwise still plays kind of fine. I was curious what the physical mechanism...

Hifiman Edition XS insane mod + measurements

Just for clarity here's how it looks in my case Also my solution for uncomfortable headband, havent seen it before so maybe it helps someone. They are HD600/6xx pads just inserted into XS headband

    Hifiman Edition XS

Created another thread since its topic was different, perhaps it is of interest as well Really nice mod for the XS https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hifiman-edition-xs-insane-mod-measurements.61089/

Hifiman Edition XS insane mod + measurements

So onto the real finding. You might have noticed on the above graphs a terrible resonance at around 5.8 kHz, showing as a high-Q dip in the frequency response, and very high distortion. This basically cannot be EQ'd out as you're just feeding energy into the resonance. I wanted to see if its due...

Hifiman Edition XS insane mod + measurements

If you just want the actual mod and arent interested in the journey just skip to post 2. Here are some experiments you might find interesting anyway. Individual measurements below, where you can see the harmonic distortion and group delay. Note that the cursor line is the same in all the...

Hifiman Edition XS unit variation measurements + RMA process

Motu M2 + ecm999 + flat plate coupler I'd buy E2x2 if it was today and pretty much all of these condenser mics are very linear anyway. If you look around you will see people got usable results even with cheaper setups. You should be aware of the standard disclaimer that comparing any results to...

    Hifiman Edition XS

I posted something relating to Edition XS in this thread, if anyone is interested https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/hifiman-edition-xs-unit-variation-measurements-rma-process.60889/

Hifiman Edition XS unit variation measurements + RMA process

I knew from Amir's measurements about all the classic resonance issues their headphones have, and QC reputation, but the reviews were great and price was right. Given the price discounts on the Christmas sale, splurged a bit and got it. But immediately i noticed some grittyness, later when i...

    Topping LA90 Review (Integrated Amplifier)

Both noise floor, distortion, and anything else about both of these amps are so good to be completely transparent, and at least according to popular ASR thought audio is a "solved problem" at this tier of performance. It's purely up to your personal choice of size, aethetics, price, how you feel...

    Topping LA90 Review (Integrated Amplifier)

Let me guess, LM3886 with a small signal opamp for error correction in its feedback loop a-la what @tomchr made with modulus-286 Here is the thread on DiyAudio Or same thing but with Howland current pump topology a-la My_ref, late Mr.Penasa already published in early 2000s Diyers had this level...

    Bizzare REW issue?

Issue resolved, REW does not support 24 bit mode on windows Java drivers, use a wrapper like FlexASIO.

    Bizzare REW issue?

Hello, recently acquired MOTU M2, here is the noise floor measurement along with the settings, using ASIO drivers: Looks nice. Lets switch to Java drivers Device is the same, computer is the same, everything identical except drivers and it does this. Tried messing around with buffer size and...

ELAC Uni-Fi 2.0 (UB52) measurements (Amir was right)

With very minimal, low-Q EQ its possible to have this sort of response, *in room*. 5db/div Flat to 36.6Hz, -3db point at 35.5Hz, from small speakers with single 5.25inch driver.

ELAC Uni-Fi 2.0 (UB52) measurements (Amir was right)

They're freely sold in the EU, yeah. But despite having the larger 6.5in driver, they were tuned differently, the poor extension means a mandatory sub. Im not sure if they just reused the driver from the DBR62, which is a 2 way, meaning a higher crossover point, meaning it was not designed as a...

ELAC Uni-Fi 2.0 (UB52) measurements (Amir was right)

Hello, Some of you might remember the controversial UB52 review where @amirm found a nasty resonance, and ended the review there, for which he received some flak.. Some argued it is just the bad unit he received, and that we should not base ourselves on it, asking for Amir to test another one...

Trying to do better - comparing Amir's measurements for speaker selection

Hmmm yes...wishful thinking on my part probably! Very cool, glad for you  Hmm i do not plan to spend my life here (but pension, probably), so if im moving maybe just see around the block a bit, netherlands, belgium, germany, denmark... and see how you guys have it up there :)...
