    trashing rega io, now what?

If you could stretch your budget a little, I'd recommend the Linn Majik DSM (streamer and integrated amp) second hand. Streaming, DAC, and phono pre-amp are all included in the one box. /3 would be best, the /2 is a little cheaper but is limited to HDMI 1.4 I believe.

    trashing rega io, now what?

I used to have a Naim Nait 2. It was under powered, but very musical. I really enjoyed it with a Rega Planar 3 and a pair of Linn Kan 2 speakers.

    trashing rega io, now what?

I once asked a dealer about the Rega IO as I was considering it as a gift for my nephew. The dealer recommended against it, and said that the Rega Brio was much better. I own a RegaDAC and Rega EAR that I use for a headphone setup. I really like Rega products, good sound quality. So perhaps a Brio?

David Chesky on Streaming Convenience vs Sound Quality

By the way, Dr. Toole makes the same quote said differently in his book. I think it applies so well to what I read on hifi fora. Treating people's experiences as data points is a more scientific way of looking at things, in my opinion.

David Chesky on Streaming Convenience vs Sound Quality

A few years ago I did a "blind" test. I took three versions of one song. One was a ripped CD, one was CD quality streaming, the third was 24/96 streaming. I put all three in a playlist and set it on random. I proceeded to go outside to do some yard work. Every 15 minutes or so I'd come inside...

David Chesky on Streaming Convenience vs Sound Quality

I think the first two words are very important.

Scientific Measurements vs Real World Usage

Perform subjective measurements first. If a difference in sound is determined to exist, and the 1 KHz technical measurements don't show a difference, then a different technical test would need to be devised to account for the difference in sound.

Is there even a tiny bit of truth in all the marketing voodoo that audio cable manufacturers say? Or is it all BS?

I think this thread could've ended with this first reply. I go with the burden of proof lies with the one making the claim. No proof? Ignore.

Subwoofer replacement question for 7.2.4 system - 1 large or 2 mismatched?

I use one subwoofer, and I can't even locate it in the room by listening. But my room is much smaller than yours.

    Floyd Toole video presentation, redux

"The scientific process requires both subjective and technical measurements."

Given that music is a temporal phenomena wouldn't response time tests be useful - something akin to grey-to-grey tests in monitors?

Years ago, I stumbled upon an FM broadcast of musicians performing live in the studio. It sounded fantastic! I immediately started scratching my head trying to figure out why it sounded so much better than recorded music. I figured that the difference was timing. Since then, I've experienced...

    Best turntable for my system

Have a listen to the Rega P1. I believe it is within your budget. I know nothing about the rest of your system, but in the end, you would also need a phono preamp.

    Benefits of using expensive DACs

It is too much trouble and not needed in my case. I'm not a hobbyist. I just like listening to music. I've bought what I consider to be the best kit available (almost), and set it up very precisely. That's good enough for me. I'm very satisfied with my hifi system, and I listen practically every...

Amir's videos are awesome! Thanks for all this.

    Benefits of using expensive DACs

Yes. I am well aware of the trap that is expectation bias. I have written much about on a defunct hifi forum. I realize that EB can't be turned off, ever. It's always there at work. The best one can do is to be aware of it. I am all too aware of my own expectation bias. That is why I ask the...

    Benefits of using expensive DACs

As an engineer, I enjoy reading, on a hfi forum no less, the work of the good engineer that is Amir. He states what he's testing, how he's testing, what test equipment is being used. He then presents the test results. It is completely repeatable. This kind of integrity is very refreshing.

    Benefits of using expensive DACs

The example I could cite was experienced twice in two different locations. Unfortunately, listening was done sighted. I always ask myself, "could this pass a blind test?" Usually the answer is "no." But sometimes I think there's enough of a difference that I could hear a difference in a...

    Benefits of using expensive DACs

Thanks for that. I should've checked who was responding to the question. Entirely my oversight.
