Aging Dynaudio AIR-15 DSP Speakers and repetitive repairs: Convert to external active or buy new L-C-R's?

I'm keeping them - but have not ventured into retrofitting them yet. The KH150's are doing the trick, and I've had a lot on my plate :) But hopefully, the drumming/studio itch will come back in spades (this has been lacking on my end the past few years :( ), and I'll have a great reason to get...

    Linear phase

Neumann KH (DSP) in the linear-phase camp too :) The speaker is linear phase all by itself. W/ MA-1 it will also be phase aligned/coherent with the sub.

USB Mic Preamp with Clip protection that also resets back to normal

If recording at 24 bits with a descent 24-bit ADC, leaving 20dB of headroom will not hurt anything, and you won't have to buy anything. Just add a bit less gain and problem solved. You can normalize after - or compress/limit to your heart's content in a non-destructive manner "in the mix"...

$1700 just to get a comparable Motu in RME

TMFX FTW!!! If you don't like TotalMix it's because you don't know how to use it and/or don't understand its design and 3-row architecture (I'm sure all TMFX users say this - only because its true!). It is very flexible (which also necessitates a degree of complexity), but also convenient and...

    I really lucked out :)

What ever happened to the digital audio transducer and the commutated voice coil ?

But the flux/gap is not a paper-thin emission that only exists "at rest" / 0-Point. There is a gradual decrease of flux density away from the rest position (not sure of the technical terms). Switching the coil does not also impact the flux and its dispersion. The coil still has interaction...

What ever happened to the digital audio transducer and the commutated voice coil ?

Oh OK - I think I'm following this a bit better now. I was thinking it was using a commutator as part of feedback or something (reading the comments about mechanical noise that would likely result) - but it's trying to use a commutator in a similar way a motor does. Seems unlikely to...

Describe your decisive experience that completely changed your view of audiophilia with a comment.

Hearing the spoken word played back in an actual recording studio monitoring chain when I was a teen in 1993. Never heard a playback system make the human voice sound "real" in that way before then. I specifically remember the phantom center image took my breath away - like the person was...

    Dirac > Audyssey XT32 ... Sure, Always?

Dynamic Volume was the overbearing culprit in my case (X3800h). I liked the normalizing function for main/anchor audio - but the surround/NAT bump is god awful IMNSHO. Exacerbates the pervasive "center/dialogue not loud enough" issue. They should allow a setting to determine how aggressive...

What ever happened to the digital audio transducer and the commutated voice coil ?

Doesn't a servo-controlled sub basically do this (the servo is a form of indirect commutator) - but is still technically an analog domain thing...

    tweeter with repeated dents

Indeed - I could see that greatly impacting the dome's ability to remain pistonic / avoid breakup.

    Artists You Have Discovered Lately

Ran across a track by Mac DeMarco while I was out and about - and quickly Shazamed him to find this track. Very smooth and chill.

How much have AD and DA chips advanced in RME units from Fireface 800 to current lineup?

"Sounding clearly better" is not likely unless going back 20 years. Being clearly more capable is absolutely likely - and is what you should be after IMO. That's what gets work done efficiently and effectively. UFX III is a solid pick that you will be unlikely to exhaust. It has oodles of...

    MOTU Technical Support Warning

I think the "Hybrid" (with USB) might still be made - but the OG with only FireWire is long gone IIRC. Firewire itself is also a point of support contention - but if using your DAW as an appliance, then who cares how old the OS and Drivers are as long as they work? Just don't put it online

Home Networking as a Hobby Gone Crazy

It's a $29 USB-C2500 from 2021 with a RTL8156B - when 2.5Gig was just becoming "all the rage" at a time when nothing had 2.5Gig onboard yet :) I was genuinely astonished it saturated the 2.5Gig connection for almost a whole day w/o any issues - and was even more surprised that TrueNAS worked...

Home Networking as a Hobby Gone Crazy

I had similar concerns - especially seeing the 2.5Gig PCIe x1 cards have heatsinks on them! I was very surprised with its sustained performance. It's an Asus branded one - so might have thermals a bit more under control than the AliExpress ones? In any regard - having one handy has been nice!

Home Networking as a Hobby Gone Crazy

Small world - I just installed a M.2-to-10Gig SFP+ Intel 82559 LAN adapter for my TrueNAS last week as it only has a single PCIe x16 slot (mATX), and that slot is used for the LSI SAS card. The 10G SFP+ is unrestricted in the M.2 PCIe x4 (3.0) slot. I didn't even know these existed until I...

How much have AD and DA chips advanced in RME units from Fireface 800 to current lineup?

In addition to SINAD/SQ type specs, modern converters also have less latency. Not going to make or break any session, but lower latency is generally preferred - especially when it's "Free" at the Converter (and not a CPU/Compute penalty like running 32-sample ASIO buffers can impose). Bigtime...
