Are my amp tubes dying early, and if yes, what could I do?

I only get 100V from the wall anyway ;) I see. Well I think the tube is broken, since the popping travels to the other channel if I swap the left and right tubes. I received the replacements today and now the amp is fine again. I also realized that it was indeed the (second) original 3 year old...

Are my amp tubes dying early, and if yes, what could I do?

Thanks everyone for your replies! I like it a lot. Like I said though, I'm not able to hear any difference to my solid state amps (I use a Sansui AU-G50X and a Kenwood KA-1100D on the same speakers at other locations). It's really more about the novelty of glowing tubes. The assembly...

Are my amp tubes dying early, and if yes, what could I do?

Hello, Almost 3 years ago, I bought an Elekit TU-8200R kit. I put it together as per the instructions (I'd say I have decent soldering skills) and it ran great. After about 1 year, one channel started cracking and popping loudly, no matter the volume setting (scary!). I swapped the tubes on...

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

I thought I'd give a quick update: I found a decent pair of apparently refurbished JA-0801. Installed the replacement; it sounds great. But doing another frequency sweep, I discovered that the woofer must be busted, too. It's much less noticeable than with the mid-range tweeter, but there's that...

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

@dualazmak sorry I should have been more specific when I said that I'll be "sourcing a replacement in Japan". I live in Japan part-time so I'll have no problem ordering one online and having it sent to my Japanese address. I'm in Okinawa (no, I have nothing to do with the Americans there). In...

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

@dualazmak, so it was the driver after all. I'll be sourcing a replacement in Japan and I was wondering if you have any tips for me. I was going to just browse jmty, mercari and ebay, but maybe you have a better idea where I can get a JA-0801 in good condition for a reasonable price? I saw a...

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

Thanks again. I'm not sure when I'll have the chance to come back to this project, but I'll report back when there's any news.

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

Okay I went ahead and took out the healthy driver just to be sure. But I didn't desolder it, if that makes a difference! I measured it as it was. I have two (cheap) multi-meters. They read 2.0 and 2.6 Ohm for the healthy driver, and 6.8 and 7.4 for the burnt one. I honestly don't see any...

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

Thanks everyone for the great advice! I confirmed that it's the speaker (not the electronics) and I think I now know what a burnt voice coil looks like. I can't say that it smells like anything. Here are three more pictures and a close-up: Now that I know what to look for, I think it's...

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

Thank you for your detailed feedback. Are you sure that the kind of noise heard in my videos can even be caused by the attentuators or wiring? In particular, if I do a frequency sweep (let's say upward), the noise will start at a given frequency but if I then lower the frequency back down, the...

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

UPDATE: The seller immediately offered me a 300$ discount after I showed him the videos and told him that used JA-0801 speakers go for around 300$ upward. My guess is he knew of the problem. In any case, I'm OK with this. Now to repairing it... I finally had the time to very carefully...

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

Personally, I love the sound of these speakers. I already have a pair of NS-1000M in a different room. They had a broken tweeter which I was able to repair. I love them to bits. Best speakers I ever had (and I went through a couple of pairs). But maybe I just haven't heard anything better yet...

Very useful, thanks. https://streamable.com/hk95ie I will discuss with the seller before starting to mess with the cabinets.

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

Thanks for the feedback. So, "broken", as in there's a physical problem with the membrane and/or cone, huh. I'll have to negotiate with the seller on what to do.

Capacitor replacement on Yamaha NS-1000R crossover

It's been a while - just wanted to say I appreciate your feedback. I must have mistyped the 'R', it's an NS-1000M. It turned out to be a broken connection in the tweeter; the cable leading from one of the connecting leads to the voice coil. It was simply burnt through. I was able to fix it by...

Please help me identify possible sources for this audio crackle (Yamaha NS-1000 speakers)

Hi! I'm not quite sure if this is the right place to ask, but I got a feeling that someone will immediately know what's going on when watching the example videos. Bought this pair of Yamaha NS-1000 (rare non-M) speakers in very good-looking condition. Seems that the left mid-range speaker has...

Capacitor replacement on Yamaha NS-1000R crossover

I got this nice pair of Yamaha NS-1000R speakers. One tweeter isn't producing any sound. I tested it independently, with and without the L-Pad and it's working just fine. So I suspect it must be a faulty capacitor. There's lots of info on the internet on how to "upgrade" the crossover in these...
