I tried the high gain mode on my D60 with balance connection. I can get to -20dB for casual listening with some tracks. What's your 'normal' SPL level? 80dB?

Depends. If you stop at each headphone stand for a demo, one day will be short. Make a selection of what you really want to see/demo/listen to.

To give you an idea of the power needed in practice. I have a pair of HE6SE v1 that I drive with my LOXJIE D60 (similar to SMSL DO400) rated 3Wx2 @32Ohm in balance mode. With Oratory EQ preamp gain -7.5dB, I have the volume between -10dB and -14dB in low gain mode and balance connection.

Have you checked the volume limiter in the menu?
