    Mesanovic CDM65 Studio Monitor Review

Distortion? What if you can't really hear it? Do you listen at 96db? I doubt it. Cardoid speakers do this and then all reports are of very good sounding bass. Anyway, if the idea bothers you, add a sub for the lowest bass notes, and roll the speaker off at 40 hz.

Fosi Audio ZD3 Balanced DAC Review

Impressive feature set and measurements for the price. Would definitely put it on a list for a value system.

Anyone try the USB out on this thing? Any performance drop off or other problems?

dCS threatens with a 7-figure lawsuit over a review

Some of the classic McIntosh gear can sell for very high prices if it is in good shape or refurbished. I have a friend who talks about what a fool he was for getting rid of his 1960's MAC tube amps years ago, as they are worth a lot today. Amps that cost a few hundred back in the day go for many...

dCS threatens with a 7-figure lawsuit over a review

Acc'd to a couple of pieces of playback software I own, LOTS of modern recordings have such distortion that regularly appears throughout playback. And no, it isn't particularly audible.

dCS threatens with a 7-figure lawsuit over a review

Why? Maybe they know some of them. Maybe they participate at forums with them and know their state of mind. Maybe they've been to high end audio shops and have talked with them. I've done all of the above.

dCS threatens with a 7-figure lawsuit over a review

Yes, that’s part of the system. Anthony Michaelson (sp?) who founded Musical Fidelity, once said that in a traditional marketing chain where there’s Manufacturer cost plus markup>distributor(s) cost plus markup>retailer cost plus markup: the cosmetics of a high end piece can be the source of as...

    Tube Buffer vs Tube Pre-amplifiers?

With tube products you don’t know what you are going to get: some add a lot of tube coloring/distortion and some don’t. I’ve had a tube buffer from Yaqin that added a lot of color/distortion. Too much for me. A buffer shouldn’t boost the signal if it is doing its job. It is supposed only to add...

dCS threatens with a 7-figure lawsuit over a review

I disagree: the function of such products is to a) look beautiful and expensive; b) reproduce audio; c) bring prestige and status to the owner. I’m pretty sure the overall measurements of the unit are good - so it does (b) just fine. Points “a” and “c” are also accomplished. Part of that is the...

dCS threatens with a 7-figure lawsuit over a review

That's part of the attraction for the market segment they are aimed at. At the very high end, lowering prices often hurts sales of the product. Buyers want exclusivity and status. That's what they are paying for. Beautiful cosmetics and a high price are essential elements of that. There are...

    New Kii Seven

I would assume the easiest best way would be to buy a mini DSP unit and hook the Seven plus the subs into that.

    Schiit Modi+ DAC Review

You can't turn it off unless you remove the cable. Or get a cable with a switch inline. But there's really no reason to turn it off.

    Bricasti M1SE Stereo DAC Review

I own a Kii Three/BXT system (BXT is new). I never tell non-audiophile friends what my system costs. They think anything over a $1000 for listening to music is insane. And I never comment on their expensive watches and cars.

    Bricasti M1SE Stereo DAC Review

Not a good example/analogy. Those cheap toasters are DESIGNED to fail after 2-3 years. In addition, many of them don't actually make toast well - they toast unevenly, burn, or undertoast. Many cheap DACs perform at or near state of the art and last for many years. So different. A better...

    Bricasti M1SE Stereo DAC Review

For a piece of equipment like this, that's still sold thru traditional dealer channels, there's a good chance that half or even 70% of the retail price is due to the cosmetics - fancy knob, heavy feet, and the case hand milled from a block of aluminum. You have cost of production, and then...

    Bricasti M1SE Stereo DAC Review

In audiophile circles, their cheaper ($5k) and more expensive models ($16K) seem to be more sought after: they have a separate 1 bit stage for DSD, so that DSD never is converted to PCM, it's just filtered out to analog. People who like DSD playback and use HQPlayer are looking for that. There...

Review and Measurements of Holo Audio May --- Probably the best discrete R2R DAC

They have a new model for about $1200 - the Cyan2. It essentially does the same thing for less. DNR -127 It has more standard parts and PS, not "audiophile" parts.

Mytek Brooklyn Bridge II Streamer Review

Wow, my Matrix streamer basically has the same functionality and cost around $1k - and has good measurements It doesn't have a touch screen, though. I guess that's worth $4k. A RPi with a nice touchscreen, an "audiophile" case and a good inexpensive pre and DAC would not total more than $$550...
