    New AIYIMA MM/MC Phono Preamplifier

Yes the gain is slightly lower than 39dB, it works best with high output MM, greater than 5mV... Also AT is not a good match on my side... No idea about the reason (capacitance maybe), anyway I don't care about the measures for this pricepoint. About the slight roll off it is there and can be...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

You're right... Thin is a qualitative description. I'l try to define the best I can. First of all, I want to carify: I'm not speaking of distortion. With my AT VM95 and low capacitance values the problem is not harshness nor sibilance. If i set values below 200pF the reproduction is shomehow...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

In this case could you explain why my AT sounds thin and almost bass-less at 50pF?

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Low capacitance makes sound flatter, if the cart is on the bright side of the spectrum (and it is the case of the AT)... It will sound bright. If you go above the "turning point" could make it sound "fuller" or rolled off (depending on the point of view). At 200pF it is spot on. Just as I...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

You're not answering... What are you measuring here? Which cart? Any cart has a different response, so where you see a peak you could find a rolloff soon after... The curve raises and moves back toward zero...

And this is referred to what? Constantly observed measuring what? ;)

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Not a general rule at all... It depends from the "starting point". Above some values trebles are rolled off.

Normally to which cart? Do you have these stages and the AT? :)

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Not quite... :) Here we're taliking about the contribution of the phono stage. The cart, the tonearm, the mat, the platter, even the cable, whatever you want... All are the same. I own the MX Vynl as said before, and this one has a switch for capacitance. If I set the AT VM95 at 50pF sounds...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Which cart are you using? The Fosi sounds towards the bright side, at least with AT carts of the VM series and tends to brighten my M75 Shure too. I think this could be due to capacitance, the lower the brighter is the sound, and I guess this box has a pretty low value.

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

The issues I experienced were not in sound reproduction, I'm glad you've found a fine unit. You're using a Concorde-like DJ cart as far as I can see. Usually these should be above 6mV. I'm pretty sure you're at the base gain. The hissing appears at +48dB in my case. Anyway, this video...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Alright, I’ll rephrase using your definitions. The two Fosi Box 5 I had here showed: - hissing coming from the speakers at normal listening levels, perceivable from a 2m far listening point (only for +48dB and above). - persistent buzzing coming from the AC adapters bundled, perceivable from...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Same experience here... There are too many variables when dealing with these projects. Real-world usage scenarios can differ from test bench measurements. I own the Zen Phono and the MX Vynl, both ranked by ASR as somehow "worse" than the Fosi Box 5... For sure they seem to be, judging by the...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

It does... Just as "broken pink panther" electronics exist this happens with cheap bundled stuff too... Two Box 5 here, two hissing transformers.

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Two different things. The adapters are noisy themself, just plugged them to the mains. No need to connect to the box... The noise is caused by something inside the adapter (DC offset?). The hissing is something that happens just switching the knob, soon back after the relay. Denon DL110 and...

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Ok the second unit goes back too... Same issues... +48dB hisses like a snake. And the AC adapter is a crap on this unit too. I've noticed both had the QC5 label... This box is an epic fail on my experience.

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Costs maybe? Anyway if they pair fair ones there are no great issues, the Ayiyma's one is dead silent. In the past I owned Rega and Schiit stages, with good AC adapters too. The one I've found with Fosi is crap, buzzes like a nest of mosquitos just plugging it.

Fosi Audio Box X5 Phono Preamp Review

Mine goes back to Fosi... Poor power supply... Noisy with audible hissing and whistling. Also a perceivable hissing is audible from speakers when gain goes above 38dB, no matter which cart is connected. Most important all these issues are there without any spinning vinyl. I've used from a...

    New AIYIMA MM/MC Phono Preamplifier

I own only a couple of ears... :) And you? How many units does the batch you use for measurement contain? Don’t tell me you draw your conclusions using just one product… Happy evangelizing to you too... :)
