    In memoriam - lost friends

thank you for sharing your stories and remembrances. Our time here is fleeting, an ephemeral thing, like sound waves in the air.

Using the Optical In on a 2012 Mac Mini

Audio Hijack is great, but it needs to be recording for the audio routes to be active. The publisher has a different app called Loopback that might be more what you're looking for.

Do You Miss Knobs and Dials and Switches?

I quite like my Yamaha a-s801 with its seven metaloid knobs and selectors. I use the loudness control often when playing something low in the background. The bass, treble, and balance knobs come in handy as well to tame particular source files.

    Game Room Speaker Choice

a small restaurant or bar would use a 70V distributed speaker system, all in mono. The nice thing about the 70V systems is the speakers can be daisy-chained together and the speakers are powered when you don't have a fixed listening position, then multi-channel or even stereo setups begin to...

    Recommendation for Stereo amplifier

I agree. I have the Yamaha A-S801 and couldn't be happier with it. I especially like the Loudness knob and other tone controls; I have used DSP in the past, but sometimes it nice to quickly adjust a physical control instead.

What to place in front of center speaker to limit early reflections from furniture?

If it makes you feel any better, I sit 15 feet from my 32" television.

What to place in front of center speaker to limit early reflections from furniture?

because of the vertical surfaces I imagine you'd have some reflections back to the tv, adding a second bounce with even longer delay. The diagonal stuff at least would bounce energy toward the ceiling. why not experiment with some sheets of cardboard folded like an accordion?

What to place in front of center speaker to limit early reflections from furniture?

if you really want to stop those reflections, surface geometries which scatter and diffuse might be more effective than trying to absorb all the energy. Anechoic chambers rely on a combination of absorption and scattering. Perhaps you could get something like this that wouldn't be too ugly (or...

Two Sources + Two Sets of Speakers

your diagram shows the right channel audio going exclusively to the fosi/audioengine setup, and left channel only to the hifi/polk. Surely this is not what you intended. I think you could achieve what you want by splitting each the red and white, and sending half the red to each amplifier, and...

    RCA connection question

Link worked for me. If those are photos of your actual equipment, your manual says to just use the one input https://cdn.ventmere.com/airpulse/uploads/2024-01/SW8-20Manual-20(EN)_BJBhOBw56.pdf

Beginner Upgrade Advice(Small room with portable DAC, bookshelf speakers and IEM)

I'm sure you saw the Edifier review. Actually not a bad little speaker. why not get a umik-1 microphone and play with the free REW software to see if a little EQ would help things? Elevate the speakers on some books to minimize reflections and raise them level with your ears. Toe them in...

Suggestions on a nice Wireless Speaker Setup + Wireless IEMs for Elderly

Do not cheap out on wireless Mics. This is one area you definitely get what you pay for. Also you will need to do some frequency planning depending on what spectrum is available in your area. (Sennheiser or Shure are safe picks, but pricey. I have been happy with the Shure wireless mics I got on...

Here's An Interesting Challenge For Amir

I was wondering if the apple headphone adapters (or any other modern small portable device) is measurably worse at max volume. That is, would one want to run it at 75% volume for best distortion/flatness. a long time ago I read that max output on some portable devices would deliberately add...

Recommendation for near field listening at moderate levels

I have a pair of the JBL 308P MKII. They sound great. However if I were buying today I'd get something that also has a digital input.

Why an AC Power Cord cannot make a difference

this is because real components have package parasitics which start to dominate above the self-resonance frequency by adding different values in parallel you can target different ripple/noise bands (plot from http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/129888/parallel-capacitor-conundrum)...

How do OTG adapters/cables possibly affect audio quality?

Ah. Apple requires an authentication IC for lightning, which only MFi licensees have access to. I suspect that adapter is not fully implementing the protocol, and only Tempotec has some checks for that. It’s digital audio though; if you don’t hear any obvious issues, then I’m sure you’re...

How do OTG adapters/cables possibly affect audio quality?

short answer: yes. The biggest problem I've seen with no-name imported chargers, adapters, and dongles is their designs will omit a lot of supply bypassing (capacitors), and protection circuitry, to save cost. The devices are still functional, but might have problems at very high or very low...
