Are "non-conventional" speaker designs worthwhile, or just gimmicks?

I'd say different, in performance, is never only a gimmick. It may be good engineering, or bad engineering, but not a gimmick. I've lived very happily with a pair of 'different' speakers, the Gradient Revolution. They're different in that they have a coaxial mid/tweet, waveguiding the tweeter...

    DIY headphone cables?

Thanks. I was actually just thinking of getting sensible gauge individual conductors preferably with pliable insulation. A thought occurred to me when looking for suitable braided sleeves yesterday, and only finding coarse weave and presumably stiff, cheesy plastic ones. Why not just use broad...

    DIY headphone cables?

Hi I'm thinking about making a new cable for my Sennheiser HD650's (needing a shorter one more than anything else.) I've found some pretty 2 pin connectors on ebay, and thinking REAN (Neutrik-ish) 3.5mm jack for the amp end. Though I'm not sure what constitutes a suitable cable. It looks like...

    New TAD CR1TX flagship speakers

My two immediate thoughts would be most likely directed towards the japanese market typically with smaller rooms, and that I'd love to see individual measurements of the mid and tweet (how good exactly is a beryllium midrange cone?). And a bonus thought for good measure, why not a DSP XO'd...

    Tekton M-Lore Speaker Measurement Update

That's a lot of money freed up right there. :D But on the other hand. I love records, in no way because they sound better, they don't in and of themselves (some times they are the only source for the best mix/ master). But somehow, through some mysterious process they make me a better and more...

    Tekton M-Lore Speaker Measurement Update

On the one hand this is an area of mature technology, where most ideas, good and bad, have been tested, and Darwin has done his thing. There's little to be had but slow and incremental improvements, mostly through application of work from other areas, materials, modeling software, what have you...

What? No Allen key? He won't be able to assemble that on his own...

Most beautiful speakers in the world ?

This is what total disregard for sound engineering practice looks like. Tweeter and midrange set a foot and a half apart? Sideways? Using tweeters very unhappy with xo at under 2k? Off axis comb filtering, anyone? This is just plain silly.

Most beautiful speakers in the world ?

I've scrolled through the whole thread looking at the pictures. The thoughts I'm left with is "trying too hard" and "make it look more advanced than it is". I do like the Kef Blades, a good few of the old JBL speakers, and those tall and slim Norwegian DIY (with a little help from my friends)...

    Tekton M-Lore Speaker Review

I used to think HiFi was a special case, "taste-fi" and all, but no. There shouldn't be any "I I find this 7.8kg bike lighter than that 6.8kg bike", or "this 50W aero drag loss is faster than that that 25W aero drag loss", but there is. Love the potty mouthed 5-year old.

    Legal fund for Reviewers/Erin?

I kind of like people, even when they're being people, provided they're likeable, of course. .:)

    Legal fund for Reviewers/Erin?

This is getting unhinged. Yes, in the sensse of a door that opens on both sides, then topples over and falls on the floor. I'm going to make sure my account has money to put where my mouth is. Erin, Amir, or both, I will contribute to your cost if this goes to court. Wonder which holds up...

    Legal fund for Reviewers/Erin?

I just noticed a good/not so good thing. There are scambots on Erins youtube now. This probably means a significant increase in activity and views on his channel. Otherwise, they'd probably not bother.

I'm waiting for Erin to report on Axpona. Looks like he's been hanging with some cool guys there.

    Legal fund for Reviewers/Erin?

I just posted this on Erics "apology". "I find it hard to spot the sincerity in this. It is an apology that starts with thanking for what amounts to support for the actions you claim to apologize for, as much as (if not more than) support for you as a person. Then it proceeds to apologize for...

    Legal fund for Reviewers/Erin?

I keep hearing the same. We've been fortunate enough here in Norway to have a fairly small population (think half of London/LA/NY), and some degree of transparency for that. Everybody in the business knows, or at least of, each other. Veteran enthusiasts are often very well informed about...

    Legal fund for Reviewers/Erin?

He's working on a redo, and that's fair given the missing feet in the first go. I'm hoping for a direct comparison between the two, like Amir did. I guess little change, and none relating to the "unique" features of the design, like dispersion.

    Legal fund for Reviewers/Erin?

Imortant point. Maybe in the long term the important point. And sure it looks like victory in this battle, but that may prove insufficient in the end. Enough of a problem with witheld test objects and ad revenue, but risk of litigation on top of that? We know reviewing is in a bad place in the...

    Legal fund for Reviewers/Erin?

Thanks for the initiative, Amir. I truly appreciate anyone making an effort to bring a bit of knowledge and understanding to consumers of, well, consumer audio. You, or Erin, or the small number of proper reviewers out there. Without the sort of honest reviewing that's under threat here, we're...
