Using a car analogy doesnt really work. All cars are different and perform differently. Other than speakers all the other components will essentially sound the same. They should be purchased on build quality, features , ergonomics, functionality, aesthetics etc. Not sound quality

So you want proof that all CD players sound the same? LOL kind of hard to do. There are a LOT of CD players out there! Much easier to prove that ANY two players sound different which really has never been done. And going on your memory of how a given CD player sounded is absurd

I actually own both of those players. Both are quiet, good remotes. good visuals , appear to be well made an d good functionality. Sound quality is not an issue since all CD players sound the same
