JDS Labs Element IV DAC & HP Amp with EQ Review

@JimmyBuckets linked to a YouTube review earlier in this thread. The reviewer certainly seems to believe that the USB isolator would be an important consideration for any potential Element IV customer. So, we're 2 for 2---two reviews, two mentions of the need for USB isolation. What's lacking...

JDS Labs Element IV DAC & HP Amp with EQ Review

Hello, Don't know about others here, but I'm rather frustrated. I'd need to connect the Element IV via USB-C, yet it's reportedly not possible for the device to perform to spec without an additional peripheral. I'm a first-timer to JDS Labs; this situation doesn't make a great impression...

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

Undoubtedly, yes, it's always wise to wait. Where did you get them--are they from Japan?

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

Unfortunately, the NW-A306 has still got at least one other major defect: wifi-related interference. With wifi enabled, many users are reporting audible noise occurring on the left channels of some IEMs and headphones. [Sigh . . .]

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

I'm pleased to report that Sony has just released a firmware update for the A306 that appears to fix the frequency response malfunction (a.k.a. the "low bass issue"). The result has been confirmed objectively, using REW to measure the output.

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

It's entirely possible that the Qudelix is good. Still, you'll want to proceed with caution: there’s an incredible degree of hyperbole, misunderstanding, and downright deception, both in regular, consumer-oriented audio and the so-called “high-end”. (Yes, there is a high end, but authentically...

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

Do you have any plans to try a second unit? For my part, I'll wait at least a few months--possibly much longer--then reassess. Among other issues, hopefully Sony will have removed the volume cap for units sold in North America.

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

aagstn, thanks for your comments. Yes, it certainly sounds like you got a defective unit. As you may know, your finding is in line with many others' experiences, though problems with the audio quality aren't universal. My guess is that Sony will resolve the frequency response issue in subsequent...

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

As you may have noticed, the problem doesn't appear to be affecting all units. Perhaps I'm naive, but I'm reasonably hopeful that Sony will resolve these issues eventually. Of course, there will still be the issue with the non-replaceable battery. . . .

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

For those considering the NW-A306, I've got a single word of advice: WAIT! As in, you'll definitely want to hold off for the foreseeable future. Not only are the majority of units volume-capped (read: output-limited), now comes word that the A306's frequency response is also incorrect, at...

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

Korean YouTube channel "Aregina" has measurements of the A306 and ZX707 starting at 5:46. I'm rather measurement-illiterate, so any comments and analysis would be appreciated.

    Testing the Sony NW-A306?

Sony has just released the NW-A306 and NW-ZX707, successors to the A105 and ZX507, respectively. I'm interested in the A306 and was hoping ASR would consider testing it. Yes, I know: the A105 tested poorly, and the new model isn't likely to be much better. If I had my proverbial druthers, I'd...

For those who are interested, it appears that the successors to the A105 and ZX507 will be released soon.

Sony NW-A105 Digital Audio Player Review

Hello, @amirm - Thanks for your review. During your testing, did you happen to try the A105's "Direct source" option? It's a setting that apparently disables any unnecessary audio processing. It might be worth testing its effects. Best wishes.
